© R A D C L I F F E C A R D I O L O G Y 2 0 1 5 Introduction Ischaemic heart disease, a major public health issue, is responsible for one in every six deaths and an estimated 1,065,000 will have an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) annually. ACS is an umbrella term that comprises unstable angina, non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
