The Kobe ( Hyogo - ken Nanbu ) , Japan , Earthquake of January 16 , 1995
9 Figure 1 The locations of the 1995 Kobe earthquake and the four other large intraplate earthquakes (Nobi, Tango, Tottori, and Fukui) in Japan since 1890. The mechanisms for the Tango, Tottori and Fukui earthquakes are also shown. The base map showing the Quaternary faults in the region is taken from Huzita (1980) and modified. M.T. is the Median Tectonic Line. Daishinsai (A major earthquake d...
متن کاملSeismic Behavior of Jacket Offshore Platform Subjected to Near and Far Field Ground Motions
Offshore structures such as jacket platforms have to inevitably be designed against sever environmental actions. In seismically active areas these structures also become susceptible to earthquake excitations. Strong ground motions recorded in recent earthquakes, including the 1995 Kobe, Japan, 1999 Chi-chi, Taiwan and 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquakes, revealed that the dynamic motions in nea...
متن کاملThe Long-Run Socio-Economic Consequences of a Large Disaster: The 1995 Earthquake in Kobe
We quantify the 'permanent' socio-economic impacts of the Great Hanshin-Awaji (Kobe) earthquake in 1995 by employing a large-scale panel dataset of 1,719 cities, towns, and wards from Japan over three decades. In order to estimate the counterfactual--i.e., the Kobe economy without the earthquake--we use the synthetic control method. Three important empirical patterns emerge: First, the populati...
متن کاملTomography of the Source Area of the 1995 Kobe Earthquake: Evidence for Fluids at the Hypocenter?
Seismic tomography revealed a low seismic velocity (-5%) and high Poisson's ratio (+6%) anomaly covering about 300 square kilometers at the hypocenter of the 17 January 1995, magnitude 7.2, Kobe earthquake in Japan. This anomaly may be due to an overpressurized, fluid-filled, fractured rock matrix that contributed to the initiation of the Kobe earthquake.
متن کاملAn Outbreak of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Yamagata Prefecture Following the Great East Japan Earthquake
Background: In the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, most of the areas in Yamagata prefecture experienced a serious power failure lasting for approximately 24 hours. A number of households were subsequently poisoned with carbon monoxide (CO) due to various causes. In this study, we conducted a survey of CO poisoning during the disaster. Methods: A questionnaire regarding CO poisonin...
