چکیده

Hemoglobin is a major constituent of erythrocytes. Because it is non-diffusable and confined within a cell membrane and because of its buffering powers, three major physiochemical equilibria are involved in any acid or base change in blood. Ionic, osmotic and Donnan balance must be main tained.16 During the acidosis phase of cell ular respiration and increasing Pco2, bi carbonate enters erythrocytes and replaces the basic anion form of hemoglobin which is in ionic balance, chiefly with K+. This replacement causes a slight hyperosmolarity which is corrected by a water shift from plasma to cells. The relative excess of bicarbonate within the cells to that out side the cells is corrected by an exchange with some of the plasma chloride ions. A similar chain of events occurs as metabolic acidosis develops, and an opposite situation occurs during the periods of developing alkalosis. When oxygen is taken up by blood in the lungs, the resulting oxyhemoglobin in crease is more acidic than the reduced hemoglobin form. This change aids in the freeing of C 0 2 from plasma bicarbonate much in the same manner that other acid compounds convert bicarbonate to C 0 2. At the tissue level, the reverse reaction aids uptake of C 0 2. This reaction is dependent upon both an immediate and a delayed acidosis.1 This paper deals mainly with these two physiological situations and the shifts which occur across the erythrocyte mem brane.

Modeling of Donnan Equilibrium in Charged Porous Materials - a Scale Transition Analysis

Knowledge of location and magnitude of charge density, together with the pore morphology allows one to calculate the Donnan potential, characterizing ion exclusion in charged porous materials. Use of the electro-chemical potential together with Gauss’ electrostatic theorem allows the computation of the ion and voltage distribution at the microscale. On the other hand, commonly used macroscopic ...

Letter: Analysis of hemoglobin aggregation from Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium experiments

Dear Sir: Gary-Bobo and Solomon (1968, 1971) have employed Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium studies in the assessment o f the anomalous osmotic behavior o f the red cell. In these studies, the interpretation was based on thermodynamic equations for ideal solutions. During the course of recent investigations, we have found that it is necessary to consider the nonideal aspects o f concentrated hemoglobin...

A cationic gadolinium contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage.

A new cationic gadolinium contrast agent is reported for delayed gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC). The agent partitions into the glycosaminoglycan rich matrix of articular cartilage, based on Donnan equilibrium theory, and its use enables imaging of the human cadaveric metacarpal phalangeal joint.

Formation Kinetics of Structure H Gas Hydrate

This paper investigates the kinetics of structure H (sH) formation kinetics above and below the structure I (sI) formation equilibrium curve at temperatures of between 2°C and 6°C. Methane was used as a help gas and methylcyclohexane (MCH) was used as sH former. It was concluded that in the points above the sI formation equilibrium curve, at the first, the sI forms, and then converts to sH be...
