Incorporating User Design Preferences into Multi-Objective Roof Truss Optimization. (May 2006) Breanna Michelle Weir Bailey, B.S., Texas A&M University; M.S., University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Anne Raich Automated systems for large-span roof truss optimization provide engineers with the flexibility to consider multiple alternatives during conceptual design. This investigation extends previous work on multi-objective roof truss optimization to include the design preferences of a human user. The incorporation of user preferences into the optimization process required creation of a mechanism to identify and model preferences as well as discovery of an appropriate location within the algorithm for preference application. The first stage of this investigation developed a characteristic feature vector to describe the physical appearance of an individual truss. The feature vector translates visual elements of a truss into quantifiable properties transparent to the computer algorithm. The nine elements in the feature vector were selected from an assortment of geometrical and behavioral factors and describe truss simplicity, general shape, and chord shape. Using individual feature vectors, a truss population may be divided into groups of similar design. Partitioning the population simplifies the feedback process by

OPTIMAL DESIGN OF TRUSS STRUCTURES BY IMPROVED MULTI-OBJECTIVE FIREFLY AND BAT ALGORITHMS
The main aim of the present paper is to propose efficient multi-objective optimization algorithms (MOOAs) to tackle truss structure optimization problems. The proposed meta-heuristic algorithms are based on the firefly algorithm (FA) and bat algorithm (BA), which have been recently developed for single-objective optimization. In order to produce a well distributed Pareto front, some improvement...

This paper introduces a reliability-based multi-objective design method for spatial truss structures. A multi-objective optimization problem has been defined considering three conflicting objective functions including truss weight, nodal deflection, and failure probability of the entire truss structure with design variables of cross sectional area of the truss members. The failure probability o...
متن کاملConstrained Multi-Objective Optimization Problems in Mechanical Engineering Design Using Bees Algorithm
Many real-world search and optimization problems involve inequality and/or equality constraints and are thus posed as constrained optimization problems. In trying to solve constrained optimization problems using classical optimization methods, this paper presents a Multi-Objective Bees Algorithm (MOBA) for solving the multi-objective optimal of mechanical engineering problems design. In the pre...
متن کاملMulti-Objective Neutrosophic Optimization Technique and its Application to Structural Design
In this paper, a multi-objective non-linear neutrosophic optimization (NSO) approach for optimizing the design of plane truss structure with multiple objectives subject to a specified set of constraints has been developed. In this optimum design formulation, the objective functions are the weight of the truss and the deflection of loaded joint; the design variables are the cross-sections of the...
متن کاملPERFORMANCE-BASED MULTI-OBJECTIVE OPTIMUM DESIGN FOR STEEL STRUCTURES WITH INTELLIGENCE ALGORITHMS
A multi-objective heuristic particle swarm optimiser (MOHPSO) based on Pareto multi-objective theory is proposed to solve multi-objective optimality problems. The optimality objectives are the roof displacement and structure weight. Two types of structure are analysed in this paper, a truss structure and a framework structure. Performance-based seismic analysis, such as classical and modal push...
