چکیده

Wireless body-area network (WBAN) is an emerging area that combines health care and comsumer electronics applications, and its standardization is still in progress. The WPAN standards such as IEEE802.15.4 and 4a do not meet the WBAN requirements such as energy efficiency on the body, scalable QoS, and inter-networks isolation summarized in Fig. 6.9.1. Due to energy absorption in the human tissue, propagation loss of the WPAN channel is over 50dB, and the channel characteristics strictly depend on the locations in the body [1]. The long-distance coverage of the WPAN makes it difficult to isolate the channel from the adjacent networks. On the other hand, the body-channel communication (BCC), which uses the human body as a communication channel, can achieve low path-loss without body shadowing effect [2]. BCC utilizes lowfrequency bands (under 200MHz) without a large antenna and without following the FCC radiation regulation because of its very short communication distance, <2m. As a result, the recent BCC optimized its data rate and power consumption for WBAN applications [3]. However, its coverage is still less than 1m in actual on-body measurements because of its signal instability. The signal instability is due to interferences coupled to the receiver through human body antenna effect [4]. The 50 to 110MHz band is for FM radio and TV broadcasting, and the interference is even −30dBm near the radio broadcasting tower, degrading the SIR of BCC to −15dB as shown in Fig. 6.9.1. For the stable BCC, robustness to SIR is more important than to SNR. In this paper, a body-channel transceiver (BCT) that cancels over −20dBm in-band interferences is designed, fabricated and tested. It also meets the QoS requirements for multimedia and health care WBAN applications.

With portable electronics and wireless sensor networks becoming increasingly pervasive, energy efficient radios have become an active area of research [1-3]. A critical figure of merit (FOM) for measuring radio efficiency in such applications is energy per bit. Though sub-nJ/b data reception is achievable for data rates >100Mb/s using optimized coherent architectures [4], there is a need for si...

Ultra wideband (UWB) radio communication is capable of a high data rate with low radiated power. A key issue for UWB design is LNA input/output matching over a wide bandwidth: 3 to 5GHz for the lower band and 3 to 10GHz for the entire band. Several UWB LNAs have been proposed in recent years. The UWB CMOS LNA presented in [1] employs a Chebyshev filter for input matching and a source follower f...

This paper introduces a new class of oscillators that generate sinusoidal signals by formation of a circular standing wave on a ring (closed-loop) transmission line (t-line). A basic form of the circular standing wave oscillator (CSWO), schematically illustrated at the top left of Fig. 21.2.1, consists of a ring t-line and two pairs of cross-coupled inverters located at two opposite ports on th...

We explore the challenges of designing RF transceivers for an ultra-low-voltage (ULV) supply with performance that is compatible to commercial standards. The ITRS roadmap projects that the aggressive device size scaling will result in supply voltage reductions to well below 1V, in particular for low-power technologies. The use of alternative energy sources also requires ULV operation in some ap...
