چکیده
ROSENBERG, D. K., and ANTHONY, R. G. 1992. Characteristics of northern flying squirrel populations in young secondand old-growth forests in western Oregon. Can. J. Zool. 70: 161-166. We compared density, sex ratio, body mass, and annual recapture rate of northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) populations in second-growth and old-growth Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) stands in the Oregon Cascade Range. Densities averaged 2.0 and 2.3 squirrels/ha in secondand old-growth stands, respectively. Although densities varied between years within stands, average densities were similar between years. Body mass and annual recapture rate were similar between stand-age classes, although a higher proportion of females was recaptured in subsequent years in second-growth than in old-growth stands. Similarly, there was a higher proportion of females than males in second-growth but not in old-growth stands. Squirrel densities were not correlated with habitat characteristics; we concluded that flying squirrels may be habitat generalists, and not a species associated with old-growth stands, as was previously hypothesized. We suggest that studies be carried out with radiotelemetry to more accurately assess the habitat associations of this species.

Northern Flying Squirrel Densities in Fir Forests Of
The northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) is the primary prey of northern spotted owls (Strix occidentalis caurina) and California spotted owls (S. o. occidentalis) throughout much of the owls' ranges. Flying squirrel abundance patterns, however, are poorly documented. Using capture-recapture techniques to estimate density, we compared flying squirrel densities among 3 types of fir (Abi...
متن کاملRelative Abundance of Northern Flying Squirrels and Red Squirrels in Different Forest Types, Black Hills, South Dakota
Northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus) and red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) in the Black Hills National Forest (BHNF) of South Dakota represent isolated populations. Because data on both species in the region are limited, and because the northern flying squirrel in South Dakota and the Black Hills National Forest has species of concern status, we trapped throughout BHNF to determ...
متن کاملHabitat Association Patterns of Breeding Birds and Small Mammals in Douglas-Fir/Hardwood Stands in Northwestern California and Southwestern Oregon
We surveyed birds and small mammals in 45 forest stands from southern Oregon, near Cave Junction, south into northern California, near Branscomb. Over this 350-km distance, we found 71 species of birds and 7 species of mammals that were common enough for detailed analysis. Fourteen species of birds and two mammals reached peak abundances in older (mature and old-growth) forests; however, none a...
متن کاملDemography of northern flying squirrels informs ecosystem management of western interior forests.
We studied northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) demography in the eastern Washington Cascade Range to test hypotheses about regional and local abundance patterns and to inform managers of the possible effects of fire and fuels management on flying squirrels. We quantified habitat characteristics and squirrel density, population trends, and demography in three typical forest cover types...
متن کاملDifferences in Townsend's Chipmunk Populations between Second- and Old-growth Forests in Western Oregon
Because Townsend's chipmunks (Tomias townsendii) may be important in maintaining natural ecosystem processes in forests in the central Oregon Cascade Range, we compared their population characteristics in young second-growth and old-growth forests. We live-trapped Townsend's chipmunks in 5 young (30-60 yr old) second-growth and 5 old-growth (>400 yr old) Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) stan...
