Talc pleurodesis in a case of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy with recurrent pneumothorax
نویسنده
چکیده
Recurrent pneumothorax is a rather uncommon finding in patients with neuromuscular diseases. For cases that happen to patients with neuromuscular diseases while on non-invasive positive pressure ventilation, pneumothorax could be fatal. Medical staff must be vigilant for this complication. Recurrent pneumothorax can be treated with either medical or surgical pleurodesis, depending on the patient's physical condit ions. Each method has its own advantages and drawbacks. We present a young adult with history of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy complicated with recurrent pneumothorax.

Pneumothoraces in collagen VI-related dystrophy: a case series and recommendations for management
Collagen VI-related dystrophy (collagen VI-RD) is a rare neuromuscular condition caused by mutations in the COL6A1, COL6A2 or COL6A3 genes. The phenotypic spectrum includes early-onset Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy, adult-onset Bethlem myopathy and an intermediate phenotype. The disorder is characterised by distal hyperlaxity and progressive muscle weakness, joint contractures and respi...

AIM To determine the efficiency and safety of talc pleurodesis in treating the malignant pleural effusion and recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax. METHODS The study included 54 patients with malignant pleural effusion and recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax, who underwent talc pleurodesis using the "talc slurry" method of pleural talc obliteration. RESULTS Pleurodesis was successful in 52 (96...
متن کاملHemoptysis following Talc Pleurodesis in a Pneumothorax Patient
The purpose of this article is to report a case of hemoptysis occurring in combination with secondary spontaneous pneumothorax following chemical pleurodesis by talc. A Japanese male with cancer of renal pelvis was found with the left pneumothorax and multiple lung metastases. A computed-tomography scan revealed severe emphysema throughout the lungs. Talc pleurodesis was employed to arrest air ...
متن کاملLong-term follow-up of thoracoscopic talc pleurodesis for primary spontaneous pneumothorax.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax treated with talc pleurodesis. A follow-up study was undertaken in all patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax who underwent talc pleurodesis for prolonged air leak or recurrence using thoracoscopy. In total, 112 patients underwent pleurodesis and follow-up data was obtain...
متن کاملSuccessful management of recurrent pneumothorax in cystic fibrosis by localized apical thoracoscopic talc poudrage.
Thoracoscopic talc poudrage of the entire pleural surface constitutes successful treatment of recurrent pneumothorax in cystic fibrosis (CF); however, subsequent lung transplantation is seriously jeopardized due to the development of extensive pleural adhesions. We describe a 27-year-old patient with CF with recurrent right-sided pneumothorax, refractory to chest tube drainage and to chemical (...
