چکیده

Professor, Department of Plant Pathology Cornell University Ithaca, New York 14853 May, 2001 Abstract Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and Cereal yellow dwarf virus (CYDV) are two aphidvectored, viral disease which most typically strikes small grains, especially barley, oats, and wheat. Limited research has been conducted regarding its reaction in sweet corn because BYDV/CYDV have not previously been an important concern. This changed during the 1998 season in New York when BYDV/CYDV was epidemic in much of the western New York sweet corn crop. BYDV-PAV was again present during the 2000-growing season, and certainly was in part responsible for the erratic performance of the sweet corn crop. A second virus disease, noted to a lesser extent in 2000, was maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV). These virus diseases are discussed below.

Impacts of Drought Stress and Planting Methods on Sweet Corn Yield and Water Use Efficiency

Abstract Seasonal drought is the most important factor to limit the production of maize in the world. Using a split plot design, a two year field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of limited irrigation regime on yield, yield components and water use efficiency of sweet corn (Zea mays var. saccharata). Responses of three sweet corn varieties KSC403, Merit and Obsession to three di...

Reactions of Sweet Corn Hybrids with Resistance to Maize Dwarf Mosaic

Yield and ear quality of sweet corn (Zea mays L.) can be reduced by maize dwarf mosaic (MDM). When Janson and Ellett (6) first reported the disease from southern Ohio, they observed nearly total losses in fields of late-planted sweet corn. Yield reduction due to MDM and symptom expression are affected by the growth stage at which sweet corn is infected (5,12, 18,25). When late plantings of swee...

Investigating the Changes in β-Carotene concentrations of Carrot and Sweet Corn Using Different Methods of Heat Treatments

Carotenoids are red, orange and yellow pigments, which are widely distributed in fruit and vegetables. The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of conventional, high pressure and microwave cooking on the concentrations of β-carotene in carrot and sweet corn. Raw carrots were washed, peeled and diced to a uniform size and then frozen at -70°C. Sweet corn was also provided in a simil...

Effect of Incorporation of Wheat Residues to Soil on Physiological Traits and Canned Yield of Sweet Corn under Water Stress

A two-year field experiment (2015–2016) was conducted as a split plot design with four replications at School of Agriculture, Shiraz University, Iran to investigate the influence of water stress (supplying 50, 70, and 100% of water requirement) and wheat residue rates (0, 25, and 50%) incorporated with soil on physiological traits and canned yield of sweet corn (Zea mays L. V. Saccharata). Net ...

Film coating with sodium alginate improves seed germination of sweet corn (Zea mays var. Saccharata) under osmotic stress conditions

Drought stress influences seed germination and seedling growth of many plants. Seed coating is technique of covering seeds with adhesive agents to improve seed performance and plant establishment and could be used to alleviate the negative effects of osmotic stress. In order to solve the problem of low germination and poor vigor of sweet corn under osmotic stress conditions (0, -0.3, -0.6 and -...
