چکیده

Analysis of texture within tumours on computed tomography (CT) is emerging as a potentially useful tool in assessing prognosis and treatment response for patients with cancer. This article illustrates the image and histological features that correlate with CT texture parameters obtained from tumours using the filtration-histogram approach, which comprises image filtration to highlight image features of a specified size followed by histogram analysis for quantification. Computer modelling can be used to generate texture parameters for a range of simple hypothetical images with specified image features. The model results are useful in explaining relationships between image features and texture parameters. The main image features that can be related to texture parameters are the number of objects highlighted by the filter, the brightness and/or contrast of highlighted objects relative to background attenuation, and the variability of brightness/contrast of highlighted objects. These relationships are also demonstrable by texture analysis of clinical CT images. The results of computer modelling may facilitate the interpretation of the reported associations between CT texture and histopathology in human tumours. The histogram parameters derived during the filtration-histogram method of CT texture analysis have specific relationships with a range of image features. Knowledge of these relationships can assist the understanding of results obtained from clinical CT texture analysis studies in oncology.

CT texture analysis of pulmonary lesions in patients suspected for lung cancer

Methods Using texture analysis, we analysed 104 lesions in 104 patients suspected for lung cancer with a positive CT correlate. The analysis was performed using TexRAD (developed by TexRAD Ltd. UK). Histology was our reference standard. Malignancy was present in 92 lesions. CTTA comprised a filtration-histogram technique where filtration extracted and enhanced features of different sizes (fine,...

Histogram analysis- a useful tool for tissue characterization in brain CT

Introduction: Pixel value in computed tomography (CT) gives the average linear attenuation coefficient of the scanned material in the path of the x-ray beam, being normalized to that of water. It is known that attenuation coefficient or HU value is a function of the chemical characteristic of the material and of the x-ray energy. The CT image shows the HU value by a shade of gr...

Quantification of tumour heterogeneity and glucose metabolism on pre-chemoradiation PET/CT predicts survival in anal cancer

Methods 42 patients (median age 60.2 years, range 36.8-80.2; 19 males) with anal SCC, who received CRT with pretreatment 18F-FDG PET/CT were retrospectively reviewed. CTTA was performed on the largest tumour diameter CT image using TexRAD software. CTTA used a filtration-histogram technique, extracting fine, medium and coarse texture features, followed by quantification of histogram parameters....

In Vivo Imaging of Tau Pathology Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging Textural Analysis

Background: Non-invasive characterization of the pathological features of Alzheimer's disease (AD) could enhance patient management and the development of therapeutic strategies. Magnetic resonance imaging texture analysis (MRTA) has been used previously to extract texture descriptors from structural clinical scans in AD to determine cerebral tissue heterogeneity. In this study, we examined the...

Quantitative Computed Tomography Features for Predicting Tumor Recurrence in Patients with Surgically Resected Adenocarcinoma of the Lung

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine if preoperative quantitative computed tomography (CT) features including texture and histogram analysis measurements are associated with tumor recurrence in patients with surgically resected adenocarcinoma of the lung. METHODS The study included 194 patients with surgically resected lung adenocarcinoma who underwent preoperative CT between Ja...
