Volumetric Vizualization of Multiple-Return Lidar Data: Using Voxels

چکیده
February 2009 109 continued on page 110 Introduction Elevation data are an important component in the visualization and analysis of geographic information. The creation and display of 3D models representing bare earth, vegetation, and surface structures have become a major focus of light detection and ranging (lidar) remote sensing research in the past few years. Lidar is an active sensor that records the distance, or range, of a laser usually fi red from an airplane, helicopter, or satellite. By converting the millions of 3D lidar returns from a system into bare ground, vegetation, or structural elevation information, extremely accurate, high-resolution elevation models can be derived and produced to visualize and quantify scenes in three dimensions. These data can be used to produce high-resolution bare-earth digital elevation models; quantitative estimates of vegetative features such as canopy height, canopy closure, and biomass; and models of urban areas such as building footprints and 3D city models. by Jason Stoker

Geo-spatial data such as multiple return LIDAR terrain data, sonar data and ocean surge data play a significant role in various emergency response and planning scenarios. Such multi-planar and volumetric data is rich in geographic features; more importantly, it also contains a significant temporal component. Understanding geospatial-temporal changes is a fundamental aspect of analyzing, underst...
متن کاملVolumetric Scene Reconstruction from Multiple Views
A review of methods for volumetric scene reconstruction from multiple views is presented. Occupancy descriptions of the voxels in a scene volume are constructed using shape-from-silhouette techniques for binary images, and shapefrom-photo-consistency combined with visibility testing for color images.

A Binary Volumetric Octree (BVO) is a volume array with binary opacity voxels, represented as octree. The BVO structure allows to stores not the complete object volume, but only the surface voxels. The new approach to Image Based Rendering (IBR), using this representation, makes it possible to use single data structure for fast, occlusion-compatible hierarchical warping, splattingbased renderin...

Over the past decades, urban growth has been known as a worldwide phenomenon that includes widening process and expanding pattern. While the cities are changing rapidly, their quantitative analysis as well as decision making in urban planning can benefit from two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) digital models. The recent developments in imaging and non-imaging sensor technologies, s...
متن کاملEvaluating the Potential of Multispectral Airborne Lidar for Topographic Mapping and Land Cover Classification
Recently multispectral LiDAR became a promising research field for enhanced LiDAR classification workflows and e.g. the assessment of vegetation health. Current analyses on multispectral LiDAR are mainly based on experimental setups, which are often limited transferable to operational tasks. In late 2014 Optech Inc. announced the first commercially available multispectral LiDAR system for airbo...
