چکیده

Staircase effect in metamagnetic transitions of charge and orbitally ordered manganites. Abstract This paper reports on peculiar metamagnetic transitions which take place in antiferromagnetic, charge and orbitally ordered (AFCOO) manganites. At very low temperatures, the virgin magnetization curves of some of these compounds exhibit several, sharp steps giving rise to a staircase-like shape. This staircase effect is shown to be sensitive to various experimental parameters. Several potential interpretations of the staircase effect are discussed in relation to this set of results. A martensitic-like scenario, involving a leading role of the structural distortions associated to the collapse of the orbital ordering, is found to be the most plausible interpretation.

Manganite charge and orbitally ordered and disordered states probed by Fe substitution into Mn site in LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O5, LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04O6 and

The layered manganese oxides LnBaMn1.96Fe0.04Oy (Ln=Y, Gd, Sm, Nd, Pr, La) have been synthesized for y = 5, 5.5 and 6. In oxygen-saturated state (y = 6) they exhibit the charge and orbital order at ambient temperature for Ln=Y, Gd, Sm, but unordered eg-electronic system for Ln=La,Pr,Nd. Fourfould increase of quadrupole splitting was observed in charge and orbitally ordered manganites compared t...

Bond- versus site-centred ordering and possible ferroelectricity in manganites.

Transition metal oxides with a perovskite-type structure constitute a large group of compounds with interesting properties. Among them are materials such as the prototypical ferroelectric system BaTiO(3), colossal magnetoresistance manganites and the high-T(c) superconductors. Hundreds of these compounds are magnetic, and hundreds of others are ferroelectric, but these properties very seldom co...

Direct observation of oxygen superstructures in manganites.

We report the observation of superstructures associated with the oxygen 2p states in two prototypical manganites using x-ray diffraction at the oxygen K edge. In the stripe order system Bi0.31Ca0.69MnO3, hole-doped O states are orbitally ordered, at the same propagation vector as the Mn orbital ordering, but no oxygen charge stripes are found at this periodicity. In La7/8Sr1/8MnO3, we observe a...

Magnetic field induced metastability in the self-doped manganites

We observe an interesting scenario of field induced metastabilities in the resistivity measurements. The resistivity exhibits a bifurcation of zero-field cooled and field-cooled (FC) temperature dependence below the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition (Tc). The clear evidence of inverse thermal hysteresis of resistivity is observed under FC condition in between 85 and 200 K, indicating the...

Strain selection of charge and orbital ordering patterns in half-doped manganites

Perovskite manganites of chemical formula Ln12xAkxMnO3 ~Ln is a lanthanide rare earth such as La or Pr; Ak is a divalent alkali such as Sr or Ca! present a complex phase diagram associated with the interplay of charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom. Charge and orbitally ordered phases appear in wide parameter ranges, for example, in La12xCaxMnO3 for x>0.5, and in Pr12xCaxMnO3 fo...
