Paleoecology of the Quarry 9 vertebrate assemblage from Como Bluff, Wyoming (Morrison Formation, Late Jurassic)

چکیده
Quarry 9 is among the richest microvertebrate localities in the Morrison Formation, having thus far produced the remains of dozens of Late Jurassic taxa. Because this lenticular claystone deposit records such a high diversity of contemporaneous species, it provides an exceptionally detailed view of their paleoecology and local paleoenvironment. In this study, we reexamined the entire Quarry 9 collection, totaling more than 3700 specimens, and developed a revised faunal list that was used to determine taxonomic and ecological diversities. Comprehensive abundance data were collected as well, revealing significant discrepancies between the most diverse and most abundant groups. Amphibious taxa (crocodilians and turtles) were very abundant, and seemed to fill an important ecological role as bconnectorsQ between the terrestrial and aquatic food webs. In contrast, small terrestrial taxa (small theropods, mammals, and small reptiles) were very diverse, highlighting their central placement within the terrestrial food web. Lithologically and sedimentologically, the deposition of Quarry 9 occurred in a low-energy pond or swamp, an interpretation supported by the available taphonomic data. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. New data towards the development of a comprehensive taphonomic framework for the Late Jurassic Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, Central Utah
The Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry (CLDQ) is the densest deposit of Jurassic theropod dinosaurs discovered to date. Unlike typical Jurassic bone deposits, it is dominated by the presence of Allosaurus fragilis. Since excavation began in the 1920s, numerous hypotheses have been put forward to explain the taphonomy of CLDQ, including a predator trap, a drought assemblage, and a poison spring. In...
متن کاملA New Specimen of Eurylambda aequicrurius and Considerations on ‘‘Symmetrodont’’ Dentition and Relationships
A new specimen of the tinodontid ‘‘symmetrodont’’ Eurylambda (Simpson, 1925a, 1929) from the Late Jurassic Como Bluff Quarry, Morrison Formation, is described. The specimen, a complete upper left molariform, is probably an M1. The major crown cusps of Eurylambda show similarities to those of triconodontids on the one hand and to spalacotherioids on the other. Cusp B of basal mammaliaforms is te...
متن کاملThe Postcranial Skeleton of an Exceptionally Complete Individual of the Plated Dinosaur Stegosaurus stenops (Dinosauria: Thyreophora) from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of Wyoming, U.S.A.
Although Stegosaurus is one of the most iconic dinosaurs, well-preserved fossils are rare and as a consequence there is still much that remains unknown about the taxon. A new, exceptionally complete individual affords the opportunity to describe the anatomy of Stegosaurus in detail for the first time in over a century, and enables additional comparisons with other stegosaurian dinosaurs. The ne...

Analysis of benthic foraminiferal assemblages was performed in Callovian deposits of the Farsian Formation Northeastern Alborz; Iran. The sequence of Callovian at the Goznawwi area consists mainly of soft marls , which contain high-diversity calcareous assemblages. In this foraminiferal succession nine morphogroups were differentiated according to shell architecture (general shape, mode of coil...
متن کاملIchthyoliths and Other Microvertebrate Remains from The Morrison Formation (Upper Jurassic) of Northeastern Wyoming: A Screen- Washed Sample Indicates A Significant Aquatic Component to the Fauna
A screenwashed microvertebrate site, the Mile 175 locality, in the Morrison Formation of Wyoming has yielded more than 3000 elements of actinopterygian fish and indicates that fish were not as rare in some parts of the formation as previously supposed. Actinopterygians are represented by diverse teeth and tooth-bearing bone fragments, fin elements, and thousands of scales and scale fragments th...
