چکیده

The writings of Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, Bauhaus theorists and pioneers of nonrepresentational art, are the framework for a discussion of contemporary issues in computational design. Kandinsky and Klee wrote of the many misguided dualisms in the art theory and pedagogy of their time. They sought to reconcile the seemingly mutually exclusive issues associated with abstraction in art. Some of these dualisms, and new ones, arise today in discussions of computational design. How and whether these dualisms can be reconciled in computational design are considered here. DOI:10.1068/b12927 Figure 1. Algorithms for visibility computation on terrains: a survey

Several environment applications require the computation of visibility information on a terrain. Examples are optimal placement of observation points, line-of-sight communication, and computation of hidden as well as scenic paths. Visibility computations on a terrain may involve either one or many viewpoints, and range from visibility queries (for example, testing whether a given query point is...

Speed perception is affected by the Ebbinghaus ^ Titchener

We examined whether the apparent extent of motion affects speed perception. On the first presentation of each trial, a light dot travelled horizontally across a central circle of one of the Ebbinghaus configurations (with either small or large inducing elements). On the second presentation, observers adjusted the speed of a dot moving within the central circle alone so as to match the speed per...

Blow-up: a free lunch?

We consider operations that change the size of images, either shrinks or blow-ups. Image processing offers numerous possibilities, put at everyone's disposal with such computer programs as Adobe Photoshop. We consider a different class of operations, aimed at immediate visual awareness, rather than pixel arrays. We demonstrate cases of blow-ups that do not sacrifice apparent resolution. This ap...

Rejoinder to Carlo Ratti

In this rejoinder, we answer questions about space syntax raised in Carlo Ratti's paper ``Urban texture and space syntax: some inconsistencies'', and discuss theoretical assumptions underlying some of his criticisms. DOI:10.1068/b3019a
