چکیده

Lens flexure and residual astigmatism were evaluated with rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses made in low, medium, and high oxygen permeable (Dk) materials to determine if significant differences would be apparent as lens Dk was changed. Fourteen successful RGP contact lens wearers had their customary lens parameters, including lens thickness, held constant in duplicate pairs made in low (15), medium (60), and high (150) Dk materials. Flexure measured by keratometry over the lenses and residual astigmatism by sphero-cylindrical overrefraction were determined after a 1-week daily wearing period for each lens. No significant differences were found within or between lens materials when comparing magnitude of flexure and residual astigmatism by over-refraction. These results indicate that practitioners can expect lenses across the spectrum of Dk values, such as those evaluated in this study, to perform in a similar manner regarding lens flexure and residual astigmatism. © Elsevier Science Inc. 1999

The Berkeley Contact Lens Extended Wear Study. Part II : Clinical results.

OBJECTIVE To describe the principal clinical outcomes associated with 12 months use of rigid gas-permeable (RGP) extended wear contact lenses and address two primary study questions: (1) does extended wear (EW) of high oxygen transmissibility (Dk/t) RGP lenses reduce the incidence of ocular complications, and (2) does the wearing of high-Dk/t lenses reduce the rate of failure to maintain 6-nigh...

The level of improvement of visual acuity in high corneal astigmatism with rigid gas permeable contact lenses.

The aim of this study was to calculate the level of improvement of visual acuity comparing the best corrected visual acuity (VA) achieved with spectacles with the best corrected VA achieved with rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses in patients with high, simple or compound corneal astigmatism (myopic, hypermetropic and mixed). The investigation of patients included auto-kerato-refractometry...

Impact of rigid gas-permeable contact lens extended wear on corneal epithelial barrier function.

PURPOSE To measure the effect of hypoxia and eye closure on epithelial permeability to fluorescein (P(dc)) during rigid lens extended wear (EW). METHODS Central corneal thickness (CT) and P(dc) were measured in 42 subjects with an optical pachometer and automated scanning fluorophotometer, respectively. All subjects had been successfully wearing rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses on a 6-night E...

The Berkeley Contact Lens Extended Wear Study. Part I : Study design and conduct.

OBJECTIVE The primary aim of the Berkeley Contact Lens Extended Wear Study (CLEWS) was to test the hypotheses that extended wear of rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses with greater oxygen permeability (Dk) reduces the incidence of contact lens-associated keratopathy (CLAK) and increases the survival rate in RGP extended wear (EW). In this article we describe the clinical trial design in de...

On-eye measurement of optical performance of rigid gas permeable contact lenses based on ocular and corneal aberrometry.

PURPOSE Our aim was to obtain a complete description of the interactions of rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses with the optics of normal eyes. METHODS We measured total and anterior-surface aberrations in four subjects, who were all long-term RGP contact lens wearers. The anterior-surface wave aberration was obtained from videokeratographic elevation maps, and ocular wave aberration was...
