Species Richness and Density of Palms in Terra Firme Forests of Amazonia

چکیده
f ABSTRACT The characteristics of the palm community in Amazonian terra firme forests are defined from three inventories carried out in the lower Tocantins (east), the lower Rio Negro (center), and the lower Ucayali (west) valleys. At all sites, most of the palms are small, understory species; the palm community is mainly under 10 m in height (99.8 to 99.9%); and adult arborescent palms occur at very low densities. Species richness and diversity are dearly higher in the western and central forests. The difference in density seen in the latter sites reflects a difference in dominant life forms. Spatial occupation of the understory by palms is almost complete at both sites: in the western forest by a large number of small axes from rhizomatous species, and in the central forest by a lower , e

Unexpected High Diversity of Galling Insects in the Amazonian Upper Canopy: The Savanna Out There
A relatively large number of studies reassert the strong relationship between galling insect diversity and extreme hydric and thermal status in some habitats, and an overall pattern of a greater number of galling species in the understory of scleromorphic vegetation. We compared galling insect diversity in the forest canopy and its relationship with tree richness among upland terra firme, várze...
متن کاملDeterminants of Plant Community Assembly in a Mosaic of Landscape Units in Central Amazonia: Ecological and Phylogenetic Perspectives
The Amazon harbours one of the richest ecosystems on Earth. Such diversity is likely to be promoted by plant specialization, associated with the occurrence of a mosaic of landscape units. Here, we integrate ecological and phylogenetic data at different spatial scales to assess the importance of habitat specialization in driving compositional and phylogenetic variation across the Amazonian fores...
متن کاملBryophytes in fragments of Terra Firme forest on the great curve of the Xingu River, Pará state, Brazil.
Microclimatic conditions of tropical forest favour the high richness of bryophytes, which by being sensitive to environmental changes, are important indicators of habitat conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the richness and species composition of the bryophyte flora in fragments of terra firme forest on the great curve of the Xingu River, Pará state, Brazil. The collections were ...

متن کاملThere's no place like home: seedling mortality contributes to the habitat specialisation of tree species across Amazonia.
Understanding the mechanisms generating species distributions remains a challenge, especially in hyperdiverse tropical forests. We evaluated the role of rainfall variation, soil gradients and herbivory on seedling mortality, and how variation in seedling performance along these gradients contributes to habitat specialisation. In a 4-year experiment, replicated at the two extremes of the Amazon ...
