Estimation of the number of motor units based on macro-EMG.
نویسندگان
چکیده
The technique of the macro-EMG was used to estimate the number of motor units in the tibialis anterior muscles of healthy subjects in a wide range of ages, and of patients with myasthenia gravis and patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or spinal muscular atrophy. The results obtained suggest a decrease in the number of motor units in the tibialis anterior muscle with increasing age in normal subjects. In myasthenic patients the motor unit count was within the normal range for their age group. Patients with motor neuron disorders on the average had a very low number of motor units.

Can Wavelet Denoising Improve Motor Unit Potential Template Estimation?
Background: Electromyographic (EMG) signals obtained from a contracted muscle contain valuable information on its activity and health status. Much of this information lies in motor unit potentials (MUPs) of its motor units (MUs), collected during the muscle contraction. Hence, accurate estimation of a MUP template for each MU is crucial. Objective: To investigate the possibility of improv...
متن کاملMotor unit size estimation: confrontation of surface EMG with macro EMG.
Surface EMG (SEMG) is little used for diagnostic purposes in clinical neurophysiology, mainly because it provides little direct information on individual motor units (MUs). One of the techniques to estimate the MU size is intra-muscular Macro EMG. The present study compares SEMG with Macro EMG. Fifty-eight channel SEMG was recorded simultaneously with Macro EMG. Individual MUPs were obtained by...
متن کاملMotor unit number estimation, isometric strength, and electromyographic measures in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Pathologic progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) results from motor neuron death, while the clinical expression also reflects the compensatory effects of collateral reinnervation consequent to lower motor neuron loss. In a cross-sectional study of ALS subjects, we made comparisons between motor unit number estimation (MUNE) values and several measures reflecting collateral reinnerv...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of Wavelet-based Feature Extraction for Intramuscular EMG Signal Decomposition
Background: Electromyographic (EMG) signal decomposition is the process by which an EMG signal is decomposed into its constituent motor unit potential trains (MUPTs). A major step in EMG decomposition is feature extraction in which each detected motor unit potential (MUP) is represented by a feature vector. As with any other pattern recognition system, feature extraction has a significant impac...
متن کاملMotor unit size in muscular dystrophy, a macro EMG and scanning EMG study.
Patients with muscular dystrophy were investigated with Macro EMG to study activity from whole individual motor units, and with Scanning EMG to study the distribution of activity within the motor unit. Macro motor unit potentials were normal or only slightly reduced in amplitude. In Scanning EMG the units had unchanged mean length compared with normal, but an uneven distribution of the activity...
