of soil were evaluated. The current study will describe the imaging system and present preliminary images produced from data collected from a soil phantom. W e have built the imaging system, which incorporates a single element source transducer and a receiver array, both obtained from the Applied Research Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University. The source and receiver array are moved together along a linear path to collect data to form a B-mode image. The source is well approximated as a point source. The transmitted signal is a eosine weighted pulse of 6 cycles at a center frequency of 6 kHz. A 52element sonar array (8x8, 3.56 cm2 close-packed elements with 3 elements missing from each corner) acts as the receiver and allows for beamforming on receive, which is accomplished off-line using delay-and-sum beamforming. This system is in operation at the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) in Champaign, I t , where the data are collected in a controlled volume (120 x 120 x 60 cm) of dry sand. Using this system, we

Subsurface defect of amorphous carbon film imaged by near field acoustic microscopy
Amorphous carbon films were examined by low frequency scanning-probe acoustic microscopy (LF-SPAM). Local elastic properties as well as topography were imaged in the acoustic mode. Two kinds of subsurface defects were revealed by the LF-SPAM method. The influence of the subsur-face defects on the elastic properties was also discussed. The ability to image subsurface defects was dependent on the...
متن کاملAcoustic Transducers and Lens Design for Acoustic Microscopy
The transducer-lens system is one major component in the performance of an acoustic microscope. The design criteria for the various types of applications of an acoustic microscope are different. For surface imaging applications, it is desired to have a small spot size and low sidelobe level. For materials characterization and subsurface imaging applications (sue~ as subsurface crack imaging), i...
متن کاملPerfectly Matched Layers equations for 3D acoustic wave propagation in heterogeneous media
This work is dedicated to the analysis of Berenger PML method applied to the 3D linearized Euler equations without advection terms, with variable wave velocity and acoustic impedance. It is an extension of a previous work presented in a 2D context [8]. The 3D linearized Euler equations are used to simulate propagation of acoustic waves beneath the subsurface. We propose an analysis of these equ...
متن کاملA Mobile Acoustic Subsurface Sensing (MASS) System for Rapid Roadway Assessment
Surface waves are commonly used for vibration-based nondestructive testing for infrastructure. Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW) has been used to detect subsurface properties for geologic inspections. Recently, efforts were made to scale down these subsurface detection approaches to see how they perform on small-scale structures such as concrete slabs and pavements. Additional efforts h...
متن کاملContact stiffness of finite size subsurface defects for atomic force microscopy: Three-dimensional finite element modeling and experimental verification
We describe a three-dimensional 3D finite element analysis model of the contact between an atomic force microscopy AFM tip and a substrate with finite size subsurface structures. The model can simulate the contact stiffness measured by a scanning AFM tip on the surface of a sample with buried nanoscale structures. In addition to the analytical verification and convergence analysis, we present t...
متن کاملThree-dimensional Borehole Radar Imaging
Before embarking on any mining operation, it is advantageous to locate the subsurface orebody in three-dimensions with a high resolution (~1m) ahead of actual mining, because this will increase productivity and efficiency. Borehole radar is such an emerging mapping tool in the mining industry, that can be used to image the subsurface orebody with high resolution. 3-D subsurface imaging using tw...
