چکیده
A cute abdominal pain in horses is often caused by abnormal conditions of the small intestine.' Simple obstruction, strangulating obstruction, and nonstrangulating obstruction are the general categories of small intestinal disorders that require surgical intervention.' Ileal impaction is the most frequently reported cause of small intestinal, nonstrangulating obstruction in adult horses.24 The condition accounted for 0.5% to 9.3% of total colic cases reported in several surveys, retrospective studies, and individual case reports.'-" In a retrospective report involving surgical diseases of the ileum, ileal impaction accounted for more than 41% of the cases.''

Coastal Bermuda hay and failure to administer routinely an anthelmintic with efficacy against tapeworms would place horses at risk of developing ileal impaction in the USA. Seventy-eight horses, with surgically confirmed ileal impaction
Ileal impaction is prevalent in the south-eastern USA, where feeding of Coastal Bermuda hay has been implicated as a risk f a c t o r. A l t e r n a t i v e l y, infection with the tapeworm Anoplocephala perfoliata has been identified as a risk factor f o r ileal impaction in the UK. We hypothesised that feeding Coastal Bermuda hay and failure to administer routinely an anthelmintic with effica...

Ileal impactions have previously been described as a common cause of colic, seen most notably in the southeastern United States. The impaction occurs within the ileum at the level of the ileocecal orifice and may extend up to 90 cm in an oral direction. Ileal impactions have been reported as the most frequent cause of non-strangulating small intestinal obstructions and account for 6.5–7.4% of a...

Impaction of the stomach typically consists of excessive dry, fibrous ingesta, but may also be composed of ingested materials that form a mass, such as persimmon seeds or mesquite beans. Other feeds that tend to swell after ingestion, including wheat, barley, and sugar beet pulp, may also cause impaction. Furthermore, dental disease may increase the likelihood of gastric impaction because of im...
متن کاملImpaction of right dorsal colon in the horse: report of 32 cases
Acute as well as chronic and recurrent colic episodes were caused by right dorsal colon (RDC) impaction in 7.98% of all colic patients. Significantly higher statistical evidence was figured out in hucul horses, mares and 7-year-old animals. Diagnosis of RDC impaction was established on the basis of rectal palpation (68.75%) or laparotomy (31.25%). Yield of rectal palpation was limited by a diff...
