Pulmonary Deposition and Retention of Inhaled Aerosols

چکیده
tendency to pulmonary collapse produced by oxygen breathing and acceleration combined. The second section considers problems of engineering space vehicles and space ecology or providing a satisfactory environment for man. As Konecci puts it, "Man is an essential part of space exploration; in fact, he is the reason for space exploration." Space ecology is really the crux of the whole thing. We can gain only limited extension of our capabilities by selecting adaptable astronauts for, as Schaeffer states in the preface, "The logical step to extend man's capacity to enter and manage new environments is to develop new tools." These tools must be useable and the vehicles habitable in very strange environments. The third section deals with medical and physiological aspects of flight and constitutes a special extension of the earlier chapters, and the final section concerns "perspectives" of biological computors and space-time perception. There is some unevenness in style but the authors speak authoritatively and the editor has succeeded in providing wide scope without being superficial. This monograph represents the first volume of a series now being written under the auspices of the United States Atomic Energy Commission's division of technical information on titles pertaining to selected industrial hygiene aspects of the United States atomic energy programs. This is a most authoritative and well-written monograph quite in keeping with the current surge of interest in pulmonary disease that has characterized the past several years. The work mainly emphasizes the many important variables, at the aerosol level, which operate from the time the patient finds himself in a contaminated atmosphere to the point of actual lung tissue damage. The relative importance of such variables as particle size of the aerosol, its shape and density, locus of deposition, and air flow characteristics are discussed in detail and one finds this most interesting and informative reading. The chapter dealing with pulmonary clearance is excellent. The role of the cilia and mucous blanket in upper respiratory tract clearance and the various elements of alveolar clearance of inhaled aerosoles are clearly reviewed. One of the most interesting chapters-experimental studies on pulmonary clearance-welds together much of the experimental data on this subject and includes the role of the pulmonary lymphatic system. The physician will find the chapter on diseased states resulting from various inhaled aerosoles to be of practical interest. The authors discuss such entities as pneumoconiosis, systemic poisons, radioactive hazards, airborne infection, and particulate …

Deposition of amphotericin B aerosols in pulmonary aspergilloma.
The aim of the present study was to characterize amphotericin B aerosols nebulized by ultrasonic and jet nebulizers and to study their deposition and pharmacokinetics in patients with pulmonary mycetoma. The aerodynamic behaviour and pulmonary deposition of amphotericin B particles were measured using a direct isotopic method based on stable labelling of the drug with 99mTc. Each nebulizer was ...
متن کاملBiopersistence of inhaled organic and inorganic fibers in the lungs of rats.
Fiber dimension and durability are recognized as important features in influencing the development of pulmonary carcinogenic and fibrogenic effects. Using a short-term inhalation bioassay, we have studied pulmonary deposition and clearance patterns and evaluated and compared the pulmonary toxicity of two previously tested reference materials, an inhaled organic fiber, Kevlar para-aramid fibrils...
متن کاملParticle dynamics and deposition in true-scale pulmonary acinar models
Particle transport phenomena in the deep alveolated airways of the lungs (i.e. pulmonary acinus) govern deposition outcomes following inhalation of hazardous or pharmaceutical aerosols. Yet, there is still a dearth of experimental tools for resolving acinar particle dynamics and validating numerical simulations. Here, we present a true-scale experimental model of acinar structures consisting of...
متن کاملParticle Deposition in the Lung
The deposition of aerosol in the lung is an important issue regardless of whether the aerosol results from airborne pollutants or aerosol therapy. The specific pattern of deposition of airborne pollutants is a determinant in the development of pulmonary diseases since this pattern determines the local doses in the airspaces and the subsequent redistribution and clearance of the deposited partic...
متن کاملPulmonary Deposition of Aerosols in Microgravity
INTRODUCTION The lung presents by far the greatest surface area to the environment of any part of the body, of the order of 50 to 100 m. As a consequence, inhalation of particles can be beneficial as a means for the delivering medication, and deleterious in cases of inhaled particulate matter in the form of atmospheric pollutants. Numerous examples of polluted atmospheres exist on earth, and as...
متن کاملComparative deposition of inhaled aerosols in experimental animals and humans: a review.
The biological effects of inhaled aerosols are often related to their site(s) of deposition within the respiratory tract. However, deposition patterns may differ between humans and those experimental animals commonly used in inhalation toxicology studies, making cross-species risk extrapolations difficult. This paper reviews the factors that control deposition and synthesizes much of the availa...
