Part III Emerging approaches in forest landscape conservation

چکیده
Conservation and land management organizations such as The Nature Conservancy are developing conservation strategies to distribute protection efforts over larger areas and a broader range of ownership and management techniques. These ‘distributed conservation strategies,’ such as working forest conservation easements, are based on the premise that blending resource extraction, such sustainable timber harvest, and conservation should yield greater socio-economic benefits without significantly compromising the conservation of biodiversity or the sustainable provisioning of ecosystem services. However, it is unknown how well these strategies will compare to traditional conservation preserves or if they will be robust to climate change and resource demand over the coming centuries. Due to scarce financial resources and the relative difficulty of negotiating easement acquisitions, it is important for forest conservation and management organizations to know which strategies most effectively meet conservation goals. Meanwhile, the long duration required to evaluate most monitoring questions leads to a lag in knowledge transfer and delayed adaptive management. In this chapter, we discuss the challenges and time constraints to measuring conservation effectiveness and illustrate a scenario-building approach that we are applying to understand the conservation effectiveness of working forest conservation strategies in two large conservation acquisitions in the Great Lakes region of the United States. We show how this approach can be used to evaluate po∗Contact information: J. Spatial Analysis of Central Zagros Forest Fragmentations for Conservation and Restoration Purposes (A Case Study: Posht kuh Forests, Fereydoonshahr, Isfahan Province)
In the current study, conservation strategies were employed for the spatial analysis of forest fragmentation and field assessment approaches in a forest landscape of Central Zagros, in the western part of Isfahan province, Iran. Vegetation and soil properties were accordingly studied in 15 forest sites with various densities including dense, semi-sparse and sparse-forests with 839.2 km2. In the...

This Paper raises its main question in determining an effective paradigm shift in conservation and development of Historic Urban landscape with the aim of recognizing the evolution process of conservation and development approaches in order to define the paradigm, moving from an integrated approach towards the ideal approach. For this purpose, first the Historic Urban Landscape concept, as a ne...
متن کاملEffects of converting forest to the rainfed lands on soil characteristics in a part of Zagros forests
The forest soils are the key parts of the Earth system that are globally degraded through anthrop induced deforestation, mainly converting to other landuses. The present study was conducted in Gazafolya village located in Merek watershed, Kermanshah, Iran, in which the soil quality of the forest and converted forest (rainfed lands) with the same topographic and geologic conditions were compared...
متن کاملHabitat Selection by Eld’s Deer following Relocation to a Patchy Landscape
An emerging issue in wildlife conservation is the re-establishment of viable populations of endangered species in suitable habitats. Here, we studied habitat selection by a population of Hainan Eld's deer (Cervus eldi) relocated to a patchy landscape of farmland and forest. Hainan Eld's deer were pushed to the brink of extinction in the 1970s, but their population expanded rapidly from 26 to mo...
