The effects of bilateral frontal eye-field, posterior parietal or superior collicular lesions on brightness thresholds in the rhesus monkey.

چکیده

Monkeys were trained to press whichever of two panels showed a small, circular, luminous stimulus. Their brightness thresholds were measured by decreasing the luminance of this stimulus, titrating their performance to the 75 y0 correct level, and averaging over 1000 trials. Both frontal eye-field and superior collicular lesions produced a small but significant rise in threshold when measured l-2 weeks post-operatively. The rise had disappeared by the sixth post-operative week. Brightness thresholds were not affected by posterior parietal lesions.

THE EFFECTS OF BILATERAL F R O N T A L EYE - FIELD , POSTERIOR PARlETAL OR SUPERIOR C O L L I C U L A R LESIONS ON VISUAL SEARCH IN THE RHESUS

Superior collicular, frontal eye-field and posterior parietal lesions increased the time taken to find a circular target among other geometrical shapes. The collicular monkeys were considerably more impaired than the other groups, suggesting that the superior colliculus is the main neural structure underlying this highly practised visual search task. Failure to respond in the 5 sec allowed on e...

Behavioral enhancement of visual responses of prestriate neurons of the rhesus monkey.

Neurons in the superior colliculus, striate cortex, frontal eye fields, and posterior parietal cortex of the monkey respond to visual stimuli. Many of these cells discharge more intensely to a stimulus when it is to be the target for a saccadic eye movement than when fixation is maintained. We have demonstrated that such enhancement of the visual response is also present for cells in prestriate...

Deficits of smooth pursuit eye movements after frontal and parietal lesions.

To assess the contribution of the human frontal and parietal cortices to smooth pursuit (SP) eye movements, we recorded ocular motor responses to predictable (periodic) and unpredictable (step-ramp) foveal pursuit stimuli and to constant-velocity optokinetic full-field motion in 31 patients with chronic focal unilateral hemispheric lesions and in 50 age-related healthy adults, using infrared re...

Functional properties of corticotectal neurons in the monkey's frontal eye field.

1. We examined the activity of identified corticotectal neurons in the frontal eye field of awake behaving rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). Corticotectal neurons were antidromically excited using biphasic current pulses passed through monopolar microelectrodes within the superior colliculus. The activity of single corticotectal neurons was studied while the monkey performed behavioral tasks des...

Discharge characteristics of single units in superior colliculus of the alert rhesus monkey.

ACCUMULATING EVIDENCE suggests that the superior colliculus plays an important role in orientation and eye movement. Ablation studies have shown that destruction of superior colliculi interferes with spatial orientation and eye movement (Z-29), although the evidence regarding the effects of such lesions in primates is conflicting (1, 7, 17, 18; and unpublished observations). Stimulation studies...
