Thermal-stress resistance and fracture toughness of two tool ceramics

چکیده

The thermal-stress resistance and fracture strength behaviour of two oxide ceramics (a hot-pressed pure AI203 and a composite ceramic NTK-HC2) subjected to severe thermal shocks have been investigated. The damage resistance parameter (Kic/of)2 for both ceramics is also determined for a wide range of temperatures (25 ~ to 800 ~ C) and cross-head rates (10 -2 cm min -1 ~ 2.5 m sec -1 ). Fracture strength behaviour of these two oxide ceramics is shown to fol low Hasselman's model where the instantaneous strength loss at the critical quenching temperature may be calculated using appropriate (Kin~of) 2 values to give good agreement with experimental results. Repeated shocks show some further degradation in the retained strength for both ceramics so that these materials are susceptible to thermal fatigue. It is found that both materials possess similar resistance to crack initiation (i.e. similar ATc and retained strength after shocking through ATc ) but the pure oxide ceramic has higher resistance to crack propagation.

Fracture toughness and thermal shock of tool and turbine ceramics

The behaviour of some commercial tool carbides and turbine ceramics has been investigated in regard to resistance to crack initiation, crack propagation and retained strength after thermal shock. New data are provided, particularly measurements of the fracture toughness of these materials at actual operating temperatures (up to 1200 ~ C). Many of the materials did not follow the generally accep...

Solid Freeform Fabrication of Continuous Fiber Reinforced Composites for Propulsion Applications

Monolithic ceramics lack the fracture toughness necessary to be considered for propulsion related applications. To be used for such applications, materials must possess low density, high elastic modulus, a low thermal-expansion coefficient, high thermal conductivity, excellent erosion and oxidation/corrosion resistance, and flaw-insensitivity. They will in many cases also be required to possess...

THERMAL FRACTURE OF CERAMICS WITH TEMPERATURE-DEPENDENT PROPERnES

Some aspects of thetmal fracture mechanics of ceramics with temperature-dependent properties are studied. It is first shown that the square-root singular field still prevaiLY in the crack tip region. However, the size of the K-dominant zone may be influenced by the effect of temperature-dependent properties. Then the steady thetmal stress intensity factor in an edge-cracked strip is calculated....

Statistical Analysis of Vickers Indentation Fracture Toughness of Y-tzp Ceramics

The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyse the fracture toughness of yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) dental ceramics by means of the Vickers indentation technique. Fracture toughness was analysed under the following loads: 29.42 N, 49.03 N, 196.13 N, and 294.20 N. Cracks that had developed from the vertices of a Vickers indentation were measured and used ...

Fracture of Ceramics with Near Surface Gradient Residual Stresses

The fracture toughness and strength of ceramics can be improved with respect to monolithic ceramics by developing graded materials as laminates composed of periodic alternating layers of one material separated by layers of a second material. The second layer must contain residual compressive stresses which are induced during densification because of differential thermal contraction of the layer...
