TCP vs. UDP Performance Evaluation for CBR Traffic On Wireless Multihop Networks

چکیده
1Multimedia applications over wireless networks become more and more demanding with respect to Quality of Service (QoS) and power consumption. As network behavior is a very important factor affecting the overall system performance, the protocol stack needs to be studied regarding Quality of Service (QoS) management. Power saving is another feature that network functionality must provide as mobility yields for battery self-sufficiency. This paper discusses QoS and power management at the transport layer of the protocol stack. More precisely, TCP and UDP are studied as different transport layer alternatives and their performance is evaluated with respect to QoS (i.e. mean/instant throughput as well as max and mean delay) and power behavior under multimedia-like streaming conditions.

Mobile ad-hoc network is a collection of wireless mobile hosts forming a temporary network without the aid of any standalone infrastructure or centralized administration. Mobile Ad-hoc networks are self-organizing and self-configuring multihop wireless networks where, the structure of the network changes dynamically. This is mainly due to the mobility of the nodes. In the current study we have ...

When supporting both voice and TCP in a wireless multihop network, there are two conflicting goals: to protect the VoIP traffic, and to completely utilize the remaining capacity for TCP. We investigate the interaction between these two popular categories of traffic and find that conventional solution approaches, such as enhanced TCP variants, priority queues, bandwidth limitation, and traffic s...

The wireless adhoc network is comprised of nodes (it can be static or mobile) with wireless radio interface. These nodes are connected among themselves without central infrastructure and are free to move. It is a multihop process because of the limited transmission range of energy constrained wireless nodes. Thus, in such a multihop network system each node (also known as router) is independent...

Due to the high availability of cheap hardware, wireless multi-hop networks and in particular Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are becoming popular in more and more contexts. For instance, IEEE 802.11 based WMNs have already started to be deployed as means to provide Internet access to rural areas in the developing world. To lower the cost and increase the coverage in such deployments, the wired n...

A mobile Ad-hoc network (MANET) is a collection of wireless nodes aimed at information exchange and resource sharing. The Destination Sequence Distance Vector (DSDV) a well-known and widely used protocol for MANETs. This paper presents the comparative performance analysis of TCP and UDP (two transport layer protocols) over DSDV in a Mobile Ad hoc Network. Three performance metrics: throughput, ...
