Vagotomy; the present position.

چکیده
The operation of vagotomy was suggested as long ago a's I812 by Brodie and was tried in cases of gastric crises by Exner and Schwatzman in 1912, and Latarjet in 1923. Bircher (1920), Steirlin (1920) and Schiassi (I925) reported good results in peptic ulcer, but the results do not appear to have been lasting and others who tried the operation were soon disappointed. Not until 1942 was really complete interruption of all vagal fibres entering the abdomen attempted, and it is now realized that only ifthe division is complete are the results lasting. Dragstedt, who was the pioneer of the complete operation, and who has performed 350 vagotomies, states that the results, even after nearly five years, continue to be so satisfactory that the operation has replaced all other procedures for peptic ulcer in his clinic (Dragstedt, personal communications). Vagotomy is now passing out of the experimental stage and is becoming established on a firm basis. There is no longer any doubt that, provided all vagal fibres are cut, the subsequent history of patients with peptic ulceration is altogether altered. Although the total number of vagal resections on record is now many hundreds, no case of subsequent perforation has been reported among them, and of those established as complete by the insulin test the very great majority have remained completely free from symptoms.

Present experiments was undertaken to study the possibility of vagus nerve function on the control of testosterone secretion. For this reason the effect of right or left side vagotomy on serum testosterone concentration was studied in rats with two testes in situ and in hemicastrates. 80 male rats with 250 - 270 gr weight allocated to 8 groups. In all groups except sham vagus nerve were cut bel...

Gastric emptying of solid meals labelled with 129Cs was studied in patients for up to one year after vagotomy and antrectomy or after proximal gastric vagotomy. Significant delay was found one month after vagotomy and antrectomy but this had returned to normal by six months. No delay was found after proximal gastric vagotomy. The effect of posture on gastric emptying was also studied in the sam...

Disorders of small bowel function after gastric surgery are well recognized and occur even after vagotomy and drainage procedures (Logan, 1964). Various aetiological factors have been suggested. They include altered motility, inadequate mixing of food and digestive enzymes, diminished pancreatic secretion, and the effect of blind or stagnant loops. Watson, Watt, Paton, Glen, and Lewis (1966) su...

The present experiment was planned to assess the role of vagus and adrenals in gastric secretion in the pylorus ligated rats. Vagotomy significantly reduced the volume of gastric juice but the reduction following adrenalectomy was not significant. Both vagotomy and adrenalectomy significantly reduced the free acid, total acid and pepsin contents of the gastric secretion, the reduction being mor...
متن کاملEffect of posture on glucose tolerance after gastric surgery.
Oral glucose tolerance after either partial gastrectomy or vagotomy and pyloroplasty for duodenal ulcer was markedly affected by posture. Peak blood glucoses and the degree of reactive hypoglycaemia were greater in the erect than in the supine position. This is probably due to positional changes in gastric emptying, and our findings support the view that after gastric surgery alteration in gast...
