Dimuon reconstruction in heavy ion collisions using a detailed description of CMS geometry

چکیده
An algorithm for the reconstruction of muon pairs produced in heavy ions collisions and detected in the CMS barrel is presented. With an efficiency of 66% for the Υ(1S)-decay dimuons in the case of central Pb-Pb collisions it enhances the Signal/Background ratio by a factor 6 in the pseudorapidity region −0.8 < η < 0.8. For the interval 0.8 < |η| < 1.5 the evaluated efficiency is 45% for Υ decay into µ + µ − and 15% for uncorrelated muons from π/K decays.

Jet Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions with Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the LHC
The status of CMS jet simulations and physics analysis in heavy ion collisions is presented. Jet reconstruction and high-pT particle tracking in the high multiplicity environment of heavy ion collisions at the LHC using the CMS calorimetry and tracking system are described. The Monte Carlo tools used to simulate jet quenching are discussed.
متن کاملModeling Magnetic Field in Heavy ion Collisions Using Two Different Nuclear Charge Density Distributions
By studying the properties of matter during heavy-ion collisions, a better understanding of the Quark-Gluon plasma is possible. One of the main areas of this study is the calculation of the magnetic field, particularly how the values of conductivity affects this field and how the field strength changes with proper time. In matching the theoretical calculations with results obtained in lab, two diffe...
متن کاملDetection of heavy quark resonances with heavy ion beams in CMS
Performances of CMS in measuring J/ψ and Υ production in heavy ion collisions are investigated. Resonance cross-sections and secondary particle multiplicities are calculated as a function of the collision impact parameter. The most unfavourable assumptions are considered for the hadron multiplicity in central collisions and their PT distributions. Results for lead and calcium beams are presente...
متن کاملCapabilities of the CMS detector for studies of hard probes in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
The capabilities of the CMS experiment to study properties of hot and dense QCD-matter created in heavy ion collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with the perturbative processes (socalled ”hard probes”) are presented. Detailed studies from complete simulations of the CMS detectors in Pb+Pb collisions at √ s = 5.5 TeV per nucleon pair are presented in view of two hard probes: quarkonium a...
متن کاملHigh-mass dimuon resonances in Pb-Pb collisions at 5.5 TeV in CMS
The measurement of the charmonium (J/ψ, ψ′) and bottomonium (Υ, Υ′, Υ′′) resonances and Z boson in nucleus-nucleus collisions provides crucial information on high density QCD matter. The observation of anomalous suppression of J/ψ at the CERN-SPS and RHIC is well established but the clarification of some important questions requires equivalent studies of the Υ family, only possible at LHC energ...
