Relationships Between Soil Salinity, Sap- Sugar Concentration, and Health of Declining Roadside Sugar Maples (Acer saccharum)

چکیده
A study of 50 sugar maples {Acer saccharum) along Gates Mills Boulevard in Gates Mills, Ohio, showed that a tree's sap-sugar concentration tended to increase with decreasing tree health and increasing soil salt concentration. Relative tree health was determined by growth ring analysis. Salt concentration in soil was determined by measuring soil extract conductivity. Extract conductivity correlated positively with the concentration of road deicing salts in the snow in winter. OHIO J. SCI. 88 (5): 192-194, 1988

WHALEN Maple Research Laboratory Botany Department College of Agriculture and Life Sciences University of Vermont October 1987 FINAL REPORT We had two objectives in the study of sugar maples which showed signs of decline and stress on a roadside where deicing salt was used in the winter. One goal was to determine If tree stress is related to the levels offsodium and chlor...
متن کاملA Comparative Analysis of Sugar Concentrations in Various Maple Species on the St. Johns Campus
It is well known that many varieties of Maple trees produce sugar containing sap in the springtime. The average concentration of Sucrose in Sugar Maple sap is estimated to be approximately 2% in concentration. The purpose of this study is to tap maples present on the St. Johns campus and obtain samples to compare their sugar concentrations to those of the sugar maples in the St. Johns Sugar bus...
متن کاملCalcium and aluminum impacts on sugar maple physiology in a northern hardwood forest.
Forests of northeastern North America have been exposed to anthropogenic acidic inputs for decades, resulting in altered cation relations and disruptions to associated physiological processes in multiple tree species, including sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.). In the current study, the impacts of calcium (Ca) and aluminum (Al) additions on mature sugar maple physiology were evaluated at the...
