چکیده

T he clinical manifestations of patients with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions are quite variable. Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS; OMIM #530000), the most commonly recognised phenotype, is characterised by the diagnostic triad of progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO, OMIM #555000), onset before 20 years of age, pigmentary retinopathy, and one or more of the following: cerebellar ataxia, cardiac conduction defect, and/or elevated protein concentration of greater than 1 g/L in cerebrospinal fluid. Other phenotypes associated with mtDNA deletions include chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia, Pearson marrowpancreas syndrome, Addison disease, diabetes mellitus, cyclic vomiting, deafness, optic atrophy, and renal tubulopathy. KSS typically occurs in adult patients, and the deleted mutant mtDNA is usually not present in blood. On the other hand, the clinical presentation of mtDNA deletion syndromes in infants and young children is variable and does not necessarily feature the classic symptoms seen in KSS. In severe cases with multisystemic involvement, a high percentage of deleted mutant mtDNA is present in all tissues examined. We describe a 41 year old woman who presented with atypical KSS at the age of 30 years. A novel mtDNA deletion was detected in both muscle and blood specimens of this patient, despite the finding of respiratory chain enzymes in the normal range in muscle samples.

Identification of a Novel Intragenic Deletion of the PHKD1 Gene in a Patient with Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease

Background Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is caused by mutations in the PKHD1gene. In the present study, we describe a severe case of ARPKD carrying a point mutation and a novel four-exon deletion of PKHD1 gene. Materials and Methods The PKHD1, PKD1 and PKD2 ...

The Mitochondrial DNA 4977-bp Deletion in Patients with Colorectal Cancer: a Case-control Study in Iran

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, and its occurrence can be ascribed to genetic susceptibility. Mitochondrial DNA 4977-bp (mtDNA 4977), as the most described mtDNA deletion, has been long proposed to be involved in various types of cancers. However, a few studies on mtDNA 4977-bp deletion in Iranian patients with CRC have been reported. The cu...

P-201: Prevalence of 4977bp Deletion in Mitochondrial DNA in IVF Failure Women

Background: Successful IVF process is limited by factors such as oocyte quality. Oocyte quality can be defined as its abilities to be fertilized, mature and give rise to normal offspring and it is dependent on nuclear maturation and cytoplasm maturation. Damage to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has been described in oocytes in IVF failure women that decrease cytoplasmic quality because Mitochondria ...

بررسی فراوانی جهش‌های مضاعف شدگی ژنHER2/neu در بیماران مبتلا به سرطان معده با استفاده از تکنیک تکثیر پروب وابسته به الحاق چندتایی

Background and aims:  Gastric malignancies have the fourth place among the most prevalent cancers. In many cancers, overexpressing of HER2/neu gene has been observed with a poor prediction. Up to now, there is a little information about the duplication of HER2/neu gene in gastric cancer using MLPA method. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency of mutations resulting from ampl...
