Minimum Rate of Dissipation Principle and Linear Corrections to the Onsager Matrix

چکیده
The Minimum Rate of Dissipation Principle (MRDP) affirms that, for timeindependent boundary conditions, a thermodynamic system evolves towards a steady-state with the least possible dissipation. In this note, examples of diffusion processes of two solutes in an isothermal system are analyzed in detail. In particular, we consider the relaxation of the system when the metric tensor (i.e. the Onsager matrix) is constant and when the Onsager coefficients weakly depend on the spatial derivatives of the concentrations. We show that, to leading order, during the relaxation towards a steady-state, the system traces out a geodesic in the space of thermodynamic configurations, in accordance with the MRDP.

The Use of the Minimum-dissipation Principle in Tectonophysics
The principle, that the rate of internal viscous dissipation is at a minimum, is incorrect when temperature and velocity fields are linked through temperature-dependent viscosity or density. This makes it inappropriate for the study of spreading ridge – transform fault systems or other plate-tectonic problems with large density stratification resulting from large temperature gradients. Correcti...
متن کاملStatistical mechanical theory for steady state systems. VI. Variational principles.
Several variational principles that have been proposed for nonequilibrium systems are analyzed. These include the principle of minimum rate of entropy production due to Prigogine [Introduction to Thermodynamics of Irreversible Processes (Interscience, New York, 1967)], the principle of maximum rate of entropy production, which is common on the internet and in the natural sciences, two principle...
متن کاملThe Second Entropy: A Variational Principle for Time-dependent Systems
The fundamental optimization principle for non-equilibrium thermodynamics is given. The second entropy is introduced as the quantity that is maximised to determine the optimum state of a non-equilibrium system. In contrast, the principles of maximum or minimum dissipation, which have previously been proposed by Onsager, Prigogine, and others as the variational principle for such systems, are sh...
متن کاملMinimum Dissipation Principle in Nonlinear Transport
We extend Onsager’s minimum dissipation principle to stationary states that are only subject to local equilibrium constraints, even when the transport coefficients depend on the thermodynamic forces. Crucial to this generalization is a decomposition of the thermodynamic forces into those that are held fixed by the boundary conditions and the subspace that is orthogonal with respect to the metri...
متن کاملThe Exact Solution of Min-Time Optimal Control Problem in Constrained LTI Systems: A State Transition Matrix Approach
In this paper, the min-time optimal control problem is mainly investigated in the linear time invariant (LTI) continuous-time control system with a constrained input. A high order dynamical LTI system is firstly considered for this purpose. Then the Pontryagin principle and some necessary optimality conditions have been simultaneously used to solve the optimal control problem. These optimality ...
