The dynamic effects of education on voter turnout
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper I investigate the dynamic relationship between formal education and voter turnout over the past half century. I reframe Brody’s puzzle about why rising education levels did not produce higher voter turnout using The American Voter’s ‘‘funnel of causality’’ to allow for a dynamic relationship between education and turnout. Analyzing survey data from 1952 to 2004, I show that the effect of college education increased starting in 1980s, thereby magnifying the ability of educational attainment to predict turnout. In contrast, education had a constant effect on political knowledge, another common measure of civic engagement. I conclude by evaluating several explanations for these divergent results. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Effects of Photographic Indentification on Voter Turnout in Indiana: A County-Level Analysis
I examine the change in voter turnout across Indiana counties before and after the implementation of photo ID requirements. Overall, statewide turnout increased by about two percentage points after photo ID; further, there is no consistent evidence that counties that have higher percentages of minority, poor, elderly or less-educated population suffer any reduction in voter turnout relative to ...
متن کاملSmall Turnout, Large Problems: An Analysis of Political Participation in American Large City Mayor Elections
Voter turnout statistics in elections across the United States reveal that political participation is too low. The United States Constitution was designed in a way to give the American people effective, elected representation at multiple levels. This can only be fulfilled if people actually turn out to vote. This study seeks to explain political participation at the city level. In city level po...
متن کاملThe Joke Isn’t on the Democrats? The Partisan Effects of Voter Turnout
This paper uses county-level electoral returns from the 1988-2000 presidential elections to measure the partisan effects of voter turnout. We first develop a simple theoretical model of voting to guide our analysis. We then argue that turnout is an endogenous variable to elections, so in order to obtain unbiased estimates we must use the instrumental variables estimator. In particular, we use w...
متن کاملThe Effect of Information on Voter Turnout: Evidence from a Natural Experiment
Do better informed people vote more? Recent theories of voter turnout emphasize a positive effect of being informed on the propensity to vote, but the possibility of endogenous information acquisition makes estimation of causal effects difficult. I estimate the causal effects of being informed on voter turnout using unique data from a natural experiment Copenhagen referendum on decentralization...
