Category Learning From Alignable Examples: An Application to Structural Geology

چکیده
Geological forces shape the earth’s crust. Normal faults, for example, form when extensional forces pull blocks of rock apart along a plane, whereas reverse faults are formed by compressional forces. Geologists classify faults to retrace the forces that have acted on an area; however, normal and reverse faults often look similar. In this study we investigated whether viewing superficially similar (highly alignable) images of a normal and reverse fault would help people learn to distinguish the two categories. Highly alignable examples highlight alignable differences—in this case, spatial relations that distinguish normal from reverse faults (e.g., Gentner & Markman, 1994). Participants were presented with two fault images—one normal, and one reverse—embedded in a text about faults. The images were either high or low in alignability. Participants then completed a 22-item fault classification test. Consistent with our predictions, participants who initially saw highly alignable images classified faults more accurately.

Detecting anomalous features in complex stimuli: the role of structured comparison.
The ability to detect anomalies in perceived stimuli is critical to a broad range of cognitive tasks, yet acquiring this ability often requires lengthy practice. In this research, we asked whether findings from research on analogical comparison can be used to aid in the acquisition of perceptual expertise. Building on findings that comparison can facilitate the detection of differences, the pre...
متن کاملThe importance of being nonalignable: a critical test of the structural alignment theory of similarity.
The structural alignment theory of similarity distinguishes 2 types of difference that may occur between stimuli: Alignable differences are those related to a commonality, whereas nonalignable differences are not related to a commonality. Alignment theory predicts that alignable differences should be more heavily weighted than nonalignable differences in similarity judgment. Experiments 1 and 2...
متن کاملCayley graph associated to a semihypergroup
The purpose of this paper is the study of Cayley graph associated to a semihypergroup(or hypergroup). In this regards first we associate a Cayley graph to every semihypergroup and then we study theproperties of this graph, such as Hamiltonian cycles in this graph. Also, by some of examples we will illustrate the properties and behavior of these Cayley graphs, in particulars we show that ...
متن کاملInjectivity in a category: an overview on smallness conditions
Some of the so called smallness conditions in algebra as well as in category theory, are important and interesting for their own and also tightly related to injectivity, are essential boundedness, cogenerating set, and residual smallness. In this overview paper, we first try to refresh these smallness condition by giving the detailed proofs of the results mainly by Bernhard Banaschewski and W...
متن کاملANT COLONY SEARCH METHOD IN PRACTICAL STRUCTURAL OPTIMIZATION
This paper is concerned with application and evaluation of ant colony optimization (ACO) method to practical structural optimization problems. In particular, a size optimum design of pin-jointed truss structures is considered with ACO such that the members are chosen from ready sections for minimum weight design. The application of the algorithm is demonstrated using two design examples with pr...
