Tutorial on Model Comparison Methods

چکیده
Background The question of how one should choose among competing explanations of data is at the heart of the scientific enterprise. Computational models of cognition are increasingly being advanced as descriptions and explanations of behavior in the cognitive sciences. The success of this line inquiry depends on the availability of robust quantitative methods to guide the evaluation and selection of these models. The basic tenet in model comparison may be summarized in terms of the following three quantitative criteria of model evaluation:

متن کاملTutorial on Robust Tracking and Regulation
Two robust methods are described for designing a control system to track a persistent reference, such as a constant or a sine wave, while rejecting a disturbance of the same type. In the first case, the Internal Model principle (IM) is developed and the design is essentially an extended control with the addition of the IM. In the second case, the dual view is taken and an Extended Estimator (Xe...

متن کاملBayesian inference with Stan: A tutorial on adding custom distributions.
When evaluating cognitive models based on fits to observed data (or, really, any model that has free parameters), parameter estimation is critically important. Traditional techniques like hill climbing by minimizing or maximizing a fit statistic often result in point estimates. Bayesian approaches instead estimate parameters as posterior probability distributions, and thus naturally account for...
