Resultatives as Causal Relations between Events

چکیده

This paper investigates some resultative constructions in English, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. It will be argued that the Direct Object Restriction (DOR) used in previous syntactic accounts is not correct. This paper examines the typical resultative constructions in English and Korean and, within the framework of event semantics, offers a proper semantic account of the relevant data on the basis of the semantic relationships of the lexical items. The analysis makes use of the notions such as ‘event,’ ‘appropriate result,’ etc. In addition, it will be shown that the proposed account is also useful for explaining the socalled resultative Verb-Verb Compounds (VVCs) in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese.

Extracting Temporal and Causal Relations between Events

A notably challenging problem related to event processing is recognizing the relations holding between events in a text, in particular temporal and causal relations. While there has been some research on temporal relations, the aspect of causality between events from a Natural Language Processing (NLP) perspective has hardly been touched. We propose an annotation scheme to cover different types...

Inference of Fine-Grained Event Causality from Blogs and Films

Human understanding of narrative is mainly driven by reasoning about causal relations between events and thus recognizing them is a key capability for computational models of language understanding. Computational work in this area has approached this via two different routes: by focusing on acquiring a knowledge base of common causal relations between events, or by attempting to understand a pa...

Mind the Gap: Investigating Toddlers’ Sensitivity to Contact Relations in Predictive Events

Toddlers readily learn predictive relations between events (e.g., that event A predicts event B). However, they intervene on A to try to cause B only in a few contexts: When a dispositional agent initiates the event or when the event is described with causal language. The current studies look at whether toddlers' failures are due merely to the difficulty of initiating interventions or to more g...

Taking Action: A Cross-Modal Investigation of Discourse-Level Representations

Segmenting stimuli into events and understanding the relations between those events is crucial for understanding the world. For example, on the linguistic level, successful language use requires the ability to recognize semantic coherence relations between events (e.g., causality, similarity). However, relatively little is known about the mental representation of discourse structure. We report ...

An Analysis of Causality between Events and its Relation to Temporal Information

In this work we present an annotation framework to capture causality between events, inspired by TimeML, and a language resource covering both temporal and causal relations. This data set is then used to build an automatic extraction system for causal signals and causal links between given event pairs. The evaluation and analysis of the system’s performance provides an insight into explicit cau...
