چکیده

Virtually all anti-epileptic drugs (A.E.n's) can affect mental functions. Greater attention is now being given by epileptologists in assessing cognitive effects of A.E.D's with a view to offer the patients excellent seizure control with least possible negative impact in cognition. Sodium valproate has the advantage of causing minimal dysfunction in cognitive functions as compared to other well known A.E.D's (1). The present study was designed to observe changes in psychomotor and cognitive functions in epileptics taking monotherapy of sodium valproate and correlate these changes if any with serum levels of valproic acid..

Hepatic functions in epileptics on sodium valproate monotherapy.

Sodium valproate (VPA) has been advocated as an antiepileptic of first choice in patients of primary generalised seizures (1) because of low risks of serious side effects and negligible neuropsychiatric manifestations. However, it has been clinically and experimentally observed to induce hepatic dysfunction including hepatic failure resulting in fatalities making periodic screening for liver fu...

Does Chronic Administration of Sodium Valproate to Juvenile Rats Induce Movement Disorder and Cognitive Dysfunction during Adulthood?

Background: Children with seizure disorder are often treated with sodium valproate (SV) on long-term basis. SV acts mainly through gamma amino butyric acid pathways, reducing the excitatory neurotransmission and modifying the monoamine concentration. Altered monoamine concentration by SV is expected to cause movement disorder and cognitive dysfunction, considered reversible after the withdrawal...
