Geosat Observations of Sea Level Response to Barometric Pressure Forcing
نویسنده
چکیده
Altimeter and sea level pressure data from the Geosat mission are analyzed for evidence of inverted barometer response of sea level to atmospheric pressure forcing. Estimates of the inverted barometer coeecient are given for a variety of geographic regions and time scales using various orbit error removal strategies. There is some sensitivity to the orbit error removal method, but the estimated coeecients show a clear latitudinal dependence and are generally between-0.5 cm/mbar and-0.9 cm/mbar. The southern oceans respond slightly more like an inverted barometer than the northern oceans for similar latitudes. The regression exhibits signiicant geographic variability, particularly near major circulation features and in the northern hemisphere. The results suggest that the inverted barometer approximation is reasonable over much of the oceans, but that some sea level variability may be correlated with barometric pressure by means other than the inverted barometer eeect.

متن کاملBarometric Pressure Variations Associated with Eastern Pacific Tropical Instability Waves*
Barometric pressure, surface temperature, and wind time series in the eastern equatorial Pacific are analyzed to determine if oceanic tropical instability wave (TIW) sea surface temperature variations cause barometric pressure gradients large enough to influence the atmospheric boundary layer. During the study period from April 2001 to September 2002, 11 TIWs propagated westward past 110!W, cau...
متن کاملSea Surface Temperature Variability along the Path of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current
The spatial and temporal distributions of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) are investigated, using monthly data from the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis for the period 1980–2004. Patterns of atmospheric forcing are identified in observations of sea level pressure and air–sea heat fluxes. It is found that a significant fraction of SST variability in the ACC...
متن کاملThe Relation of Exercise to Bubble Formation in Animals Decompressed to Sea Level from High Barometric Pressures
1. Bullfrogs (Rana catesbiana) and rats have been subjected to high barometric pressures and studied for bubble formation on subsequent decompression to sea level. Pressures varying from 3 to 60 pounds per square inch, in excess of atmospheric pressure, were used. 2. Muscular activity after decompression is necessary for bubble formation in bullfrogs after pressure treatment throughout the abov...
متن کاملArterial blood gas reference values for sea level and an altitude of 1,400 meters.
Blood gas measurements were collected on healthy lifetime nonsmokers at sea level (n = 96) and at an altitude of 1,400 meters (n = 243) to establish reference equations. At each study site, arterial blood samples were analyzed in duplicate on two separate blood gas analyzers and CO-oximeters. Arterial blood gas variables included Pa(O(2)), Pa(CO(2)), pH, and calculated alveolar-arterial PO(2) d...
