Aplasia Cutis Congenita and Dysmorphic Syndrome After Antithyroid Therapy During Pregnancy
نویسنده
چکیده
Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is alleged to be a side effect of antithyroid therapy during pregnancy. This occurrence is uncommon. Only 24 cases have been reported in the literature. In France, there has been no report by the National Center of Pharmacovigilance since 1985. We report a 39-year-old woman with no significant past history in whom Graves disease developed without eye symptoms. She was using methimazole 60 mg daily for 3 months, followed-up by propylthiouracil until delivery. At birth, the newborn had a scalp defect on the vertex, measuring 7x 2-cm, transient hypothyroidism, and a dysmorphic syndrome (flat face, low-set ears, upper lip retraction, xiphoid funnel, finger-like claws, and low-set fifth finger). At age 1 year, the aplasia cutis was treated surgically. Aplasia cutis is a rare disorder, sometimes associated with other malformations. The mothers with hyperthyroidism who delivered children with reported cases of ACC have used either carbimazole or its active metabolite, methimazole, during early pregnancy. The relationship between methimazole or c a rbimazole therapy during pregnancy and ACC in the newborn remains to be proven. Nevertheless, to the authors’ knowledge, no case has occurred in which the mother has used only propylthiouracil. There f o re , c o nsideration should be given to the exclusive use of propylthiouracil in pregnancy.

Agenesis of scalp is an uncommon but well-recognized clinical entity. Congenital scalp and skull defects can be either obvious or occult; over 300 cases have been reported in literature. Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is recognized as a heterogeneous disorder, all characterized by focal absence of the epidermis, dermis and sometimes the calvarium and/or dura. We present a case of ACC in an infan...

One of the few conditions associated with skin ulceration in the neonatal period is aplasia cutis congenita (ACC). ACC or congenital absence of the skin is considered an uncommon anomaly. This malformation commonly appears on the scalp as a solitary lesion, though it can be seen in other surfaces of the body such as the trunk, limbs and face. ACC can be associated with other physical anomalies ...

A congenital defect of the scalp is an uncommon entity occurring in one in 2000 deliveries. It may present certain diagnostic problems in the newborn infants. In this era of invasive intrapartum fetal monitoring, Obstetricians should be made aware of this entity as in its limited form aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) could easily be mistaken for damage inflicted by spiral electrodes. The late scar...
