Technologies of treatment : scaling up ART in the Western Cape , South Africa

چکیده
Introduction This chapter examines technologies of 'treatment scaleup,' the extension of antiretroviral treatment (ART) to most or all of HIV positive people who need it, in the Western Cape, South Africa. The chapter describes three technologies related to ART scaleup: those of administration; partnership, rather different to the 'partnership' Campbell (this volume) describes and thirdly what we refer to as treatment citizenship. These non-medical treatment technologies operate alongside conventional medical treatment technologies to make up a successful, even exemplary ART scaleup. The chapter also argues that the success of these technologies derives from their involvement in a larger phenomenon: a new construction of 'HIV citizenship' within the Western Cape.

An Evaluation of the Role of an Intermediate Care Facility in the Continuum of Care in Western Cape, South Africa
Background A comprehensive primary healthcare (PHC) approach requires clear referral and continuity of care pathways. South Africa is a lower-middle income country (LMIC) that lacks data on the role of intermediate care (IC) services in the health system. This study described the model of service provision at one facility in Cape Town, including reason for admission, the mix of services and ski...
متن کاملQuantification of Radicals Generated in a Sonicator
The hydroxyl radical (OH•) is a powerful oxidant produced as a consequence of cavitation in water. It can react nonspecifically in breaking down persistent organic pollutants in water into their mineral form. It can also recombine to form hydrogen peroxide which is very useful in water treatment. In this study, terephthalic acid (TA) and potassium iodide dosimetry were used to quantify and inve...
متن کاملAntiretroviral treatment and the health workforce in South Africa: how have ART workers been affected by scaling up?
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of scaling up antiretroviral treatment (ART) on the working environment and motivation of health workers in South Africa; and to suggest strategies to minimize negative effects and maximise positive effects. METHODS Exploratory interviews with health managers and senior clinical staff were used to identify locally relevant work environment indicators. A sel...

A humidity sensor thin film based on nanoporous PbWO4-WO3 composites has been prepared by spin coating technique with different weight ratio of PbWO4 (Pb) and WO3 (WO) (PWWO-01, PWWO-82, PWWO-64, PWWO-46, PWWO-28, PWWO-01) and their humidity sensing properties have also been investigated at different relative humidity (RH) in the range of 5% - 98% at room temperature with dc resistance. It is f...

Providing universal health coverage (UHC) through better maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent health (MNCAH) can benefit both parties through North–South research collaborations. This paper describes lessons learned from bringing together early career researchers, tutors, consultants and mentors from the United Kingdom, Kenya, and South Africa to work in multi-disciplinary teams in a capaci...
