چکیده

In 1979, Professor Bilger was among the first faculty to have a sabbatical visit at the new Combustion Research Facility (CRF) at Sandia Laboratories, in Livermore, California. During this sabbatical, Professor Bilger received from Dr. Mike Drake, then at General Electric Corporate Research and Development, an advance copy of the pioneering paper of Raman scattering in a turbulent flame of H2 into air, later published as Drake et al. [1]. Bilger recognized that the laser Raman data were showing the effects of differential diffusion of H2 relative to diffusion of oxygen, nitrogen, and water. In the turbulent jet flame of H2, the effects of differential diffusion were convolved with chemical reaction and heat transfer. A seminal paper emerged [2]. Bilger’s early interest in differential diffusion led to other experimental [3] and computational [4] investigations of the topic as well. In an effort to isolate the effect of differential diffusion without the added complication of chemical reaction with heat release, a nonreacting experiment was proposed at the end of the theoretical paper by Bilger and Dibble [5]. That paper presented a numerical model of a turbulent jet of a binary mixture, into air. The binary mixture, henceforth called “fuel,” consisted of 7 mol% Freon in 93% H2. In the numerical model, a turbulent diffusivity was added to the molecular diffusivity of each species, H2, Freon, and air.

Reaction-rate, Mixture-fraction, and Temperature Imaging in Turbulent Methane/air Jet Flames

Instantaneous two-dimensional measurements of reaction rate, mixture fraction, and temperature are demonstrated in turbulent partially premixed methane/air jet flames. The forward reaction rate of the reaction CO OH ⇒ CO2 H is measured by simultaneous OH laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and two-photon CO LIF. The product of the two LIF signals is shown to be proportional to the reaction rate. T...

Mixture fraction imaging in turbulent non-premixed flames with two-photon LIF of krypton

The use of a noble gas as an inert tracer for mixing studies in combustion systems is investigated. Simultaneous two-photon laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) of krypton and Rayleigh scattering are used for imaging measurements of mixture fraction and temperature in turbulent non-premixed jet flames. The turbulent flames investigated in this study include a piloted CH4/air flame (Sandia flame D) ...

Planar Rayleigh Scattering Results in Helium / Air Mixing Experiments in a Mach

Planar Rayleigh scattering measurements using an ArF-excimer laser have been performed to investigate helium mixing into air at supersonic speeds. The capability of the Rayleigh scattering technique for flow visualization of a turbulent environment is demonstrated in a large-scale, Mach 6 facility. The detection limit obtained with the present setup indicates that planar, quantitative measureme...

Quantitative visualization of compressible turbulent shear flows using condensate-enhanced Rayleigh scattering

This paper describes several flow visualization experiments carried out in Mach 3 and Mach 8 turbulent shear flows. The experimental technique was based on laser scattering from particles of H2O or CO2 condensate that form in the wind tunnel nozzle expansion process. The condensate particles vaporize extremely rapidly on entering the relatively hot fluid within a turbulent structure, so that a ...

Two-dimensional imaging of molecular hydrogen in H(2)-air diffusion flames using two-photon laser-induced fluorescence.

We report the use of a tunable ArF laser at 193.26 nm to record simultaneous single-laser-shot, planar images of molecular hydrogen and hot oxygen in a turbulent H(2)-air diffusion flame. Excitation spectra of fuel and oxidantrich flame zones confirm a partial overlap of the two-photon H(2) (6,0) Q(1) E, F ? X and single-photon O(2) (10,2) R(17) B ? X (Schumann-Runge) absorption bands. UV Rayle...
