چکیده

This paper attempts to measure the performance of the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) (Fielding et al. 1997) in a multiple access, satellite environment. The HTTP client’s access to the Internet is via a shared satellite uplink channel. The multiple access protocols we have chosen to simulate are Slotted ALOHA (Kleinrock and Lam 1975) and Reservation ALOHA (Crowther et al. 1973). We have constructed a detailed simulation of “web browsing” behavior using ns-2.0 (McCanne 1998) and have used this to simulate HTTP transfers over random access satellite channels. The purpose of this work is to determine if current medium access techniques are sufficient to accommodate many terrestrial users whose traffic patters are dominated by HTTP client-server behavior.

Bit Error Performance for Asynchronous Ds Cdma Systems Over Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channels (RESEARCH NOTE)

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of CDMA in mobile communications. Bit error rate is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of CDMA systems. In this paper, we develop a technique to find an accurate approximation to the probability of bit error for asynchronous direct–sequence code division multiple–access (DS/CDMA) systems by modeling the multipl...

Enhanced spread Aloha physical layer design and performance

This paper describes the key design and performance aspects of the Enhanced Spread Spectrum Aloha (E-SSA) physical layer, which represents an essential component of the S-band Mobile Interactive Multimedia European Telecommunication Institute standard. Thanks to advanced signal processing at the gateway side, the E-SSA random access protocol allows to achieve unprecedented spectral efficiency i...

Experimentation and modelling of HTTP over satellite channels

This paper investigates the performance of various versions of the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) over a geosynchronous satellite link. Both HTTP/1.0, the currently popular form of the protocol , and HTTP/1.1, the recently standardized form of HTTP, are studied. Next, we quantify the impact of a moderate bit-error rate on the performance of HTTP. Finally, we expand the mathematical model of...

Enhancing the Performance of TCP over Satellite Links

Understanding the interaction between TCP and MAC layer protocols in satellite networks is critical to providing high levels of service to users. We separate our study of TCP and MAC layer protocols into two parts. We consider the problem of scheduling at bottleneck links and propose two new queue management algorithms. They are capable of offering higher levels of fairness as well as lower lat...
