Alternation in English

چکیده

It has been noted repeatedly that although many verbs do occur in both syntactic patterns, some verbs only occur in one of the two patterns. For example, verbs such as cost and deny are widely described as occurring only with the DO construction whereas verbs such as drag and yell only with the PO construction. In addition, although certain verbs have been observed in both syntactic patterns, they only occur in one of the two patterns when the Theme has a restricted meaning. For example, when the Theme denotes an event or a nonreferential object (e. g. a bath, a hard time), the verb give tend to occur in the DO construction, not the PO construction.

Effects of processing complexity in perception and production. The case of English comparative alternation

This paper discusses the effect of processing complexity on the English comparative alternation. The reported experiments show a processing advantage of the synthetic comparative in perception, but a preference of the analytic comparative in sentence production if the base adjective is cognitively complex. These results imply that perceptual complexity and complexity in production have divergin...

English Object Alternations: A Unified Account

A hallmark of the English verb lexicon is the availability of multiple argument realization options for many English verbs. Studies of the English verb lexicon have drawn attention to one facet of this phenomenon: the availability of a range of object alternations (Levin 1993)—alternate realizations of the VP-internal arguments of apparently triadic verbs. One of the best-known of these alterna...

Early syntactic productivity : Evidence from dative shift q

The abstractness of children’s early syntactic representations has been questioned in the recent acquisition literature. While some research has suggested that children’s knowledge of basic constructions such as the transitive is robust and abstract at a very young age, other work has proposed that young children only have constructions that are specific to individual lexical items. The present...

Phonological Aspects of Internal Vowel Alternation in English

Today, these IVA forms are considered to be "irregular", and are vestiges of former prevalent and productive processes i...

Case alternation and length effects in lateralized word recognition: studies of English and Hebrew.

Effects of CaSe AlTeRnAtIoN were studied in two lateralized visual lexical decision experiments. We manipulated word length and letter case (UPPER, lower and MiXeD) in both English (Exp. 1, N=60) and Hebrew (Exp. 2, N=60). The previously reported visual field and word length interaction was found for upper and lower case presentation, but not for MiXeD CaSe, where both fields were affected by w...
