The molting hormones from the embryonated EGG of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta (l.).

چکیده
26-Hydroxyecdysone is the predominant molting hormone in 24- to 44-hour-old embryonated tobacco hornworm eggs, accounting for approximately 80% of the ecdysones present at this stage of development. This molting hormone was previously shown to be the major ecdysone present in 48- to 64-hour-old embryonated eggs of this insect. During both of these periods of embryonic development in the hornworm 20-hydroxyecdysone is a minor component, in contrast to its presence as the major ecdysone in the hornworm during certain stages of post-embryonic development.

Control of moulting and metamorphosis in the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta (L.): cessation of juvenile hormone secretion as a trigger for pupation.
During the final larval instar of the tobacco hornworm the presence of juvenile hormone (JH) inhibits the secretion of the brain's prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH). The corpora allata cease to secrete JH when the larvae attain a weight of approximately 5 g. The JH is cleared from the haemolymph in about 24 h. This process in itself renders the brain competent to release PTTH. The actual releas...
متن کاملThe Putative AKH Receptor of the Tobacco Hornworm, Manduca sexta, and Its Expression
Adipokinetic hormones are peptide hormones that mobilize lipids and/or carbohydrates for flight in adult insects and activate glycogen Phosphorylase in larvae during starvation and during molt. We previously examined the functional roles of adipokinetic hormone in Manduca sexta L. (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae). Here we report the cloning of the full-length cDNA encoding the putative adipokinetic ho...
متن کاملChanges in midgut active ion transport and metabolism during larval-larval molting in the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta)
Ion transport and metabolism in the posterior midgut before, during and after the molt to the fifth instar of the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta were investigated. In situ measurements reveal that the transepithelial potential difference of the posterior midgut falls during the molting process. This finding was confirmed by in vitro experiments in which it was demonstrated that both the transep...
متن کاملControl of moulting and metamorphosis in the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta (L.): growth of the last-instar larva and the decision to pupate.
The dynamics of growth and the timing of release of the brain's prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) in final instar larvae of Manduca sexta are consistent with the following hypothesis. When a 5th-stage larva reaches a critical weight of about 5 g an unidentified process is initiated which requires 24 h to be completed. At the completion of this process the brain is rendered competent to release ...
متن کاملIsolation and expression of the eclosion hormone gene from the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta.
Eclosion hormone (EH) is a 62-amino acid neuropeptide that initiates the ecdysis behavior of insects. The EH-encoding gene of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, was isolated by using a designed 72-mer oligonucleotide probe. Sequence analysis of this gene and its corresponding cDNA showed that the EH gene is 7.8 kilobases and consists of three exons. Exon I is totally nontranslated; exon II co...
