Schistosomiasis in Ogbese-Ekiti, Re-Infection After Successful Treatment with Praziquantel

چکیده

Urinary schistosomiasis infection is one of the major public health problem facing developing countries with school age children at greater risk. Previous studies showed that Ogbese Ekiti is endemic for urinary schistosomiasis. The impact of chemotherapy was evaluated using praziquantel (40mg/kg body weight) on S.heamatobium among school pupils in OgbeseEkiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. Urine samples were collected between the hours of 7.00am and 10.00am. The number of eggs in 10ml of each urine sample was calculated from the mean of two counts. At baseline, one hundred and seventy two (172) pupils were screened for eggs of the S.heamatobium out of which 75.6% were positive with high egg intensity ranging between 40780 eggs/10ml of urine. Out of the one hundred and seventy two screened, thirty subjects with high egg intensity (440-780 eggs/10ml of urine) were treated with praziquantel in January 2009. After 10 days post treatment, the urine samples of the thirty subjects were negative for S.heamatobium. The subjects were monitored monthly for re-infection for seven consecutive months (February – August).Re-infection was first noticed in May.

Effect of praziquantel treatment of Schistosoma mansoni during pregnancy on intensity of infection and antibody responses to schistosome antigens: results of a randomised, placebo-controlled trial

BACKGROUND Praziquantel treatment of schistosomiasis during pregnancy was only recommended in 2002; hence the effects of treatment during pregnancy are not fully known. We have therefore evaluated the effects on infection intensity and the immunological effects of praziquantel treatment against Schistosoma mansoni during pregnancy, compared with treatment after delivery. METHODS A nested coho...

The impact of repeated treatment with praziquantel of schistosomiasis in children under six years of age living in an endemic area for Schistosoma haematobium infection.

Praziquantel was given every eight weeks for two years to children aged under six years of age, living in a Schistosoma haematobium endemic area. Infection with S. haematobium and haematuria were examined in urine and antibody profiles (IgA, IgE, IgM, IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4) against S. haematobium adult worm and egg antigens were determined from sera collected before each treatment. Chemoth...

Schistosomiasis haematobia: histopathological course determined by cystoscopy in a patient in whom praziquantel treatment failed.

Schistosomiasis haematobia or urinary schistosomiasis is one of the main public health problems in Africa and the Middle East. A single dose of 40 mg praziquantel per kg body weight continues to be the treatment of choice for this infection. The aims of this follow-up were to study the post-treatment course of a patient infected with S. haematobium and not submitted to re-exposure, and to ident...
