Fully nonlinear wave-current interactions and kinematics by a BEM-based numerical wave tank

چکیده
A numerical wave tank (NWT) with fully nonlinear free-surface boundary conditions is developed to investigate nonlinear wave–wave and wave–current interactions and the resulting kinematics. In the present paper, the variation of wave amplitude and wave length of a monochromatic wave under several different speeds of steady uniform currents is studied through direct numerical simulations in the time domain. The nonlinear wave–current interactions are solved using a boundary integral equation method (BIEM) and a Mixed Eulerian– Lagrangian (MEL) time marching scheme. Both a semiLagrangian approach and Lagrangian (material-node) approach are employed and their performance is compared. A regridding algorithm based on cubic spline fitting is devised for updating the free-surface moving boundary in a stable and accurate manner. The incident waves are generated by feeding prescribed analytical waves on the input boundary. An efficient artificial numerical beach is devised and applied to dissipate wave energy and minimize wave reflections from the downstream wall. Nonlinear wave kinematics as a result of nonlinear wave–current interactions is calculated and the results are compared with a multi-layer Boussinesq model. The spatial variation of nonlinear wave profiles and kinematics affected by currents are also addressed and discussed.

Applying zoning method for numerical modeling of two immiscible fluid interface motion in an underwater tank using BEM
In this study, boundary element method was used to model sea wave propagation on a hemisphere shape under water tank and oil-water common surface oscillation in the tank. Also, kinematic and dynamic oundary conditions of free surface and common surface of oil and water were discritized by Finite difference method. There were some singularities in BEM method, which were removed by applying zonin...

This research deals with the validation of fluid dynamic models, used for simulating shoaling and breaking solitary waves on slopes, based on experiments performed at the Ecole Supérieure d’Ingénieurs de Marseille’s (ESIM) laboratory. A separate paper, also presented at this conference, reports on experiments. In a first part of this work, a fully nonlinear potential flow model based on a Bound...

In this article, we report on the development of hybrid numerical models used to simulate free surface, i.e., wave, hydrodynamics, wave-structure interactions, wave breaking and nearshore transformation, and wave-induced sediment transport. Specifically, a two(2D) or three-dimensional (3D) numerical wave tank (NWT), based on Fully Nonlinear Potential Flow (FNPF) equations, is used to simulate f...
متن کاملModeling of freak wave generation in a 3D-NWT
Freak waves are extreme ocean waves that are not predicted by traditional wave probability distributions. We study wave energy focusing, as a possible mechanism for freak wave formation, in a three-dimensional (3D) Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) solving fully nonlinear potential ow equations. The NWT combines a higher-order 3D-BEM and a Mixed-Eulerian-Lagrangian time updating of the free surface, ba...

A numerical investigation of nonlinear interaction mechanisms producing large wave energy concentrations, which lead to episodic transient waves, is performed using both a Higher Order Spectral (HOS) model and a three-dimensional (3D) fully nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank (NWT). Self-focusing of wave energy is achieved through modulating a periodic wave train along two orthogonal directions. Nonl...
