The Growth and Evolution of Massive Black Holes

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Recent observations have for the first time found a link between supermassive black holes and the galaxies which harbor them. The observed correlation between black hole mass and galactic bulge stellar mass (Figure 1) has thus placed the evolution of supermassive black holes, or quasars, in the broader context of the formation of galaxies and structures . So far, observations are limited by the small aperture of HST to the most nearby galaxies only. GSMT with AO will be the only facility to have the combination of spatial resolution and light-gathering power to measure kinematical masses of the stars surrounding black holes at cosmological distances. Closer to home, the light-gathering power of GSMT will allow us to watch individual stars as they fall into the supermassive black hole in the center of our Galaxy, a process hinted at of the brightest stars circling Sgr A*.

Rapidly spinning massive black holes in active galactic nuclei: evidence from the black hole mass function

The comparison of the black hole mass function (BHMF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) relics with the measured mass function of the massive black holes in galaxies provides strong evidence for the growth of massive black holes being dominated by mass accretion. We derive the Eddington ratio distributions as functions of black hole mass and redshift from a large AGN sample with measured Eddingto...

The formation and evolution of massive black holes.

The past 10 years have witnessed a change of perspective in the way astrophysicists think about massive black holes (MBHs), which are now considered to have a major role in the evolution of galaxies. This appreciation was driven by the realization that black holes of millions of solar masses and above reside in the center of most galaxies, including the Milky Way. MBHs also powered active galac...

Origin and Evolution of Massive Black Holes in Galactic Nuclei

Beyond all reasonable doubt, black holes are commonly found in the nuclei of most normal galaxies. In recent years, dynamical measurements of hole masses have transformed the study of their functioning and evolution. In particular, relating their masses, as measured contemporaneously, to the properties of distant quasars can constrain models of the combined evolution of black holes and their ho...

The Formation and Evolution of the First Massive Black Holes

The first massive astrophysical black holes likely formed at high redshifts (z ∼ > 10) at the centers of low mass (∼ 10 M⊙) dark matter concentrations. These black holes grow by mergers and gas accretion, evolve into the population of bright quasars observed at lower redshifts, and eventually leave the supermassive black hole remnants that are ubiquitous at the centers of galaxies in the nearby...

Massive Black Holes: formation and evolution

Supermassive black holes are nowadays believed to reside in most local galaxies. Observations have revealed us vast information on the population of local and distant black holes, but the detailed physical properties of these dark massive objects are still to be proven. Accretion of gas and black hole mergers play a fundamental role in determining the two parameters defining a black hole: mass ...

High Mass Black Holes in Soft X-ray Transients

1 We suggest that high-mass black holes; i.e., black holes of several solar masses, can be formed in binaries with low-mass main-sequence companions, provided that the hydrogen envelope of the massive star is removed in common envelope evolution which begins only after the massive star has finished He core burning. Our evolution scenario naturally explains the gap (low probability region) in th...
