چکیده

Objective Ultrasound imaging has been used to measure the coronal curvature and vertebral rotation on children with scoliosis. However, those studies still use the two-dimensional information to report the three-dimensional (3D) deformity. To truly describe the 3D curvature of spine, a 3D spinal image is needed. This study reported a preliminary experiment to reconstruct a 3D spinal curvature from both in-vitro and in-vivo data acquired from a medical ultrasound system.

Stress Analysis of the Human Ligamentous Lumber Spine-From Computer-Assisted Tomography to Finite Element Analysis

Detailed investigation on biomechanics of a complex structure such as the human lumbar spine requires the use of advanced computer-based technique for both the geometrical reconstruction and the stress analysis. In the present study, the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) and finite element method (FEM) are merged to perform detailed three dimensional nonlinear analysis of the human ligamentous...

How do scoliotic spines with low stiffness and viscoelastic properties react to the application of spinal orthoses?

Objective In the management of moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), spinal orthosis is generally applied. Nonetheless, the time to reach its maximal corrective effect after donning or the time to return to the original scoliotic curvature after doffing may not be well understood because the spine has low stiffness and viscoelastic properties and continuous radiographic assessments ar...

Visualization of scoliotic spine using ultrasound-accessible skeletal landmarks

PURPOSE: Ultrasound imaging is an attractive alternative to X-ray for scoliosis diagnosis and monitoring due to its safety and inexpensiveness. The transverse processes as skeletal landmarks are accessible by means of ultrasound and are sufficient for quantifying scoliosis, but do not provide an intuitively comprehendible visualization of the spine. METHODS: We created a method for visualizatio...

3D/2D registration and segmentation of scoliotic vertebrae using statistical models.

We propose a new 3D/2D registration method for vertebrae of the scoliotic spine, using two conventional radiographic views (postero-anterior and lateral), and a priori global knowledge of the geometric structure of each vertebra. This geometric knowledge is efficiently captured by a statistical deformable template integrating a set of admissible deformations, expressed by the first modes of var...

Modeling and Measurement of 3D Deformation of Scoliotic Spine Using 2D X-ray Images

Scoliosis causes deformations such as twisting and lateral bending of the spine. To correct scoliotic deformation, the extents of 3D spinal deformation need to be measured. This paper studies the modeling and measurement of scoliotic spine based on 3D curve model. Through modeling the spine as a 3D Cosserat rod, the 3D structure of a scoliotic spine can be recovered by obtaining the minimum pot...
