Compaction Bands in Porous Rock

چکیده

Compaction bands are localized, planar zones of compressed material that form perpendicular to the maximum compressive stress. Compaction bands have been observed in porous sandstone formations in the field and in laboratory compression tests on porous sandstone, plaster, glass beads, polycarbonate honeycombs and metal foams. Because the permeability of the compacted material is much reduced, compaction bands can form barriers to fluid flow and adversely affect attempts to inject or withdraw fluids from porous reservoirs. An analysis of conditions for the onset of compaction bands as a bifurcation from homogeneous deformation indicates that they can occur when the stress strain curve for uniaxial compressive deformation has a peak. Formation of compaction bands is favored by significant compactive inelastic deformation and by a reduction in the yield stress for shear with increasing compressive mean stress. These conditions are typical for stress states on a “cap” yield surface often used to model the inelastic deformation of porous geomaterials.

Theory of Compaction Bands in Porous Rock

Compaction bands are narrow planar zones of localized purely compressive (without shear) deformation that form perpendicular to the most compressive principal stress. Such bands have been observed in high porosity rocks in the laboratory and in the field. Because compaction presumably decreases permeability, these bands can act as barriers to flow within reservoirs. Reexamination of the results...

Compaction Localization in Porous Sandstone: Implications for Reservoir Mechanics

Compaction of porous rocks can occur in two modes: uniform and localized. Recent experimental work has demonstrated that compaction can occur in tabular zones that expand with increasing applied deformation. The appearance of compaction bands and their growth has a strong influence on the measured permeability of the host rock. The rock behind the moving compaction front can be either uniformly...

Conditions for compaction and shear bands in a transversely isotropic material q

This paper derives conditions for localized deformation for a transversely isotropic constitutive relation intended to model the response of geological materials in the axisymmetric compression test. The analysis considers the possibility of shear bands, with dilation or compaction, and pure compaction bands. The latter are planar zones of localized pure compressive deformation (without shear) ...

Permeability measurements inside compaction bands In situ permeability measurements inside compaction bands using X-ray CT and lattice Boltzmann calculations

The paper presents some results of the characterization of microstuctural differences inside and outside compaction bands in natural sandstone. Specimens of Aztec sandstone were scanned at the synchrotron APS, at Argonne National Laboratory (USA). Porosity measurements obtained by image analysis show a sharp transition inside/outside the compaction band. Finally, preliminary permeability measur...
