چکیده

Using data on more than 27,000 establishments (1983-1999) in the United States, this paper exploits an institutional feature of the union organizing process in order to generate an estimate of the causal effect of unionization on the probability of establishment closure. In the U.S., most establishments become “unionized” as a partial consequence of a secret ballot election among the workers. If employers where unions barely won the election are ex ante comparable in all other ways to employers where unions barely lost, differences in their subsequent outcomes should represent the true impact of union recognition. The regression discontinuity analysis finds a negligible effect on shortand long-run establishment survival rates – suggesting that distortions that are necessarily implied by the monopoly union model would more likely be found along the intensive margin of employment. * Matthew Butler and Francisco Martorell provided outstanding research assistance. We thank David Card for helpful discussions, and are grateful to Hank Farber for providing election data.

Do Unions Cause Business Failures?

Estimating the causal effect of unionization on business survival rates is difficult in the absence of large, representative data on establishments with union status information. It is also confounded by selection bias, because unions may tend to organize at highly profitable enterprises that are more likely to survive. Using new data on more than 27,000 establishments that faced organizing dri...

The Surprising Impacts of Unionization: Evidence from Matched Employer-employee Data∗

Using administrative data matching individual worker earnings to employers in a regression discontinuity design based on close union representation elections, this study presents new evidence on the impacts of unionization on establishment and worker outcomes. The paper first shows evidence that close union elections are subject to nonrandom selection, with large discontinuities in pre-election...

Do Unions Affect Innovation?

We examine the causal effect of unionization on firm innovation, using regression discontinuity design that relies on “locally” exogenous variation generated by elections that pass or fail by a small margin of votes. Passing a union election leads to an 8.7% (12.5%) decline in patent quantity (quality) three years post-election. A reduction in R&D expenditures, reduced productivity of inventors...

The Surprising Impacts of Unionization on Establishments: Accounting for Selection in Close Union Representation Elections∗

Regression discontinuity studies of the effects of union representation rely on quasi-random variation in vote tallies near the majority-rule threshold. It is precisely in the closest elections, however, that incentives may be most powerful for manipulation. This study shows evidence for such contaminating selection in close union elections. First, unions lost close elections at an unexpectedly...
