چکیده

Some neurons in the nucleus HVc of the songbird respond vigorously to sequences of syllables as they appear in the bird’s own song (such as AB), but they respond weakly or not at all when the same syllables are played individually (A or B) or in a di2erent order (BA). We have constructed a network model that replicates this temporal sequence selectivity. The model is based on recurrently connected networks that produce strong resonant responses when the pattern of excitation evoked by a stimulus matches the pattern of excitation generated internally within the network. In the model, syllable B does not generate such a resonant response by itself. However, if syllable A is presented to the network followed by syllable B, the activity generated by A modi7es the e2ective connectivity of the network making it resonantly responsive to B. This produces a highly selective response to the sequence of syllables AB, but not to any other combination. c © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

A Model of Song Selectivity and Sequence Generation in Area HVc of the Songbird

In songbirds, nucleus HVc plays a key role in the generation of the syllable sequences that make up a song. Auditory responses of neurons in HVc are selective for single syllables and for combinations of syllables occurring in temporal sequences corresponding to those in the bird’s own song. We present a model of HVc that produces syllableand temporal-combination-selective responses on the basi...

Mechanisms underlying the sensitivity of songbird forebrain neurons to temporal order.

Neurons in the songbird forebrain area HVc (hyperstriatum ventrale pars caudale or high vocal center) are sensitive to the temporal structure of the bird's own song and are capable of integrating auditory information over a period of several hundred milliseconds. Extracellular studies have shown that the responses of some HVc neurons depend on the combination and temporal order of syllables fro...

Song- and order-selective neurons in the songbird anterior forebrain and their emergence during vocal development.

Auditory experience is critical for vocal learning in songbirds as in humans. Therefore, in a search for neural mechanisms for song learning and recognition, the auditory response properties of neurons in the anterior forebrain (AF) pathway of the songbird brain were investigated. This pathway plays an essential but poorly understood role during the period of song development when auditory feed...

Focal expression of mutant huntingtin in the songbird basal ganglia disrupts cortico-basal ganglia networks and vocal sequences.

The basal ganglia (BG) promote complex sequential movements by helping to select elementary motor gestures appropriate to a given behavioral context. Indeed, Huntington's disease (HD), which causes striatal atrophy in the BG, is characterized by hyperkinesia and chorea. How striatal cell loss alters activity in the BG and downstream motor cortical regions to cause these disorganized movements r...
