چکیده

We study resolution of tame cyclic quotient singularities on arithmetic surfaces, and use it to prove that for any subgroup H ⊆ (Z/pZ)×/{±1} the map XH(p) = X1(p)/H → X0(p) induces an injection Φ(JH(p)) → Φ(J0(p)) on mod p component groups, with image equal to that of H in Φ(J0(p)) when the latter is viewed as a quotient of the cyclic group (Z/pZ)×/{±1}. In particular, Φ(JH(p)) is always Eisenstein in the sense of Mazur and Ribet, and Φ(J1(p)) is trivial: that is, J1(p) has connected fibers. We also compute tables of arithmetic invariants of optimal quotients of J1(p). 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 11F11, 11Y40, 14H40

On Fibers and Local Connectivity of Mandelbrot and Multibrot Sets

We give new proofs that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at every Misiurewicz point and at every point on the boundary of a hyperbolic component. The idea is to show “shrinking of puzzle pieces” without using specific puzzles. Instead, we introduce fibers of the Mandelbrot set (see Definition 3.2) and show that fibers of certain points are “trivial”, i.e., they consist of single points. ...

Semi-stable Reduction for Curves

Given a normal proper and geometrically connected curve C over the function field K(S) of S, we seek “good” models over S. For instance, if we choose a projective embedding of C into some PK(S) then its Zariski closure in PS is an arithmetic surface (where the S-flatness uses that S is Dedekind). Hence, we can always find an arithmetic surface with generic fiber C. Since S is normal and C is re...

A connectedness property of algebraic moment maps

Let K be a connected compact Lie group and M a Hamiltonian K-manifold, i.e., a symplectic K-manifold equipped with a moment map μ : M → k := (LieK). A theorem of Kirwan (implicitly in [Ki]) asserts: if M is connected and compact then the level sets of μ are connected. The purpose of this note is to prove such a statement in the category of algebraic varieties. First, we reformulate Kirwan’s the...

Loss analysis of single mode telecommunication fiber thermally-diffused core areas

In this work, diffusion processes in thermally connected cylindrical fibers with weakly guiding and circular cross-section, that is, telecommunication fibers, have been presented. There have been discussed diffusion distributions of the core dopant of fibers spliced at T ≈ 2000 °C. Gaussian approximations of the core dopant concentration distribution and refractive index in the connecting area ...

Nonuniform Internal Structure of Fibrin Fibers: Protein Density and Bond Density Strongly Decrease with Increasing Diameter

The major structural component of a blood clot is a meshwork of fibrin fibers. It has long been thought that the internal structure of fibrin fibers is homogeneous; that is, the protein density and the bond density between protofibrils are uniform and do not depend on fiber diameter. We performed experiments to investigate the internal structure of fibrin fibers. We formed fibrin fibers with fl...
