چکیده

Nonlinear optical properties in the fullerene C60 and the extracted higher fullerenes – C70, C76, C78, and C84 – are theoretically investigated by using the exciton formalism and the sum-overstates method. We find that off-resonant third order susceptibilities of higher fullerenes are a few times larger than those of C60. The magnitude of nonlinearity increases as the optical gap decreases in higher fullerenes. The nonlinearity is nearly proportional to the fourth power of the carbon number when the onsite Coulomb repulsion is 2t or 4t, t being the nearest neighbor hopping integral. This result, indicating important roles of Coulomb interactions, agrees with quantum chemical calculations of higher fullerenes. ∗E-mail address: [email protected]; URL: http://www.etl.go.jp/ ̃harigaya/

Optical Absorption in Higher Fullerenes: Effects of Symmetry Reduction

Optical absorption spectra of higher fullerenes (C70 and C76) as well as of C60 are calculated by a tight binding model with a long range Coulomb interaction. A reasonable parameter set gives calculated spectra which are in overall agreement with the experiments of of C60 and C70 in solutions. The variations of the spectral shape are discussed relating with the symmetry reduction going from C60...

Photophysical Properties in C60 and Higher Fullerenes

The optical excitations in C60 and higher fullerenes, including isomers of C76, C78, and C84, are theoretically investigated. We use a tight binding model with long-range Coulomb interactions, treated by the Hartree-Fock and configuration-interaction methods. We find that the optical excitations in the energy region smaller than about 4 eV have most of their amplitudes at the pentagons. The osc...

Optical response of C60 and C70 fullerenes: Exciton and lattice fluctuation effects

Molecular exciton effects in the neutral and maximally doped C60 (C70) are considered using a tight binding model with long-range Coulomb interactions and bond disorder. By comparing calculated and observed optical spectra, we conclude that relevant Coulomb parameters for the doped cases are about half of those of the neutral systems. The broadening of absorption peaks is well simulated by the ...

Polaron excitations in fullerenes : Theory as π - conjugated systems ( Review article in Prog . Theor . Phys . )

We review the recent theoretical treatment of fullerenes as π-conjugated systems. Polaronic properties due to the Jahn-Teller type effects are mainly discussed. (1) A Su-Schrieffer-Heeger type electron-phonon model is applied to fullerenes: C60 and C70, and is solved with the adiabatic approximation to phonons. When the system (C60 or C70) is doped with one or two electrons (or holes), the addi...
