Progressive Muscular Dystrophy Involving the Extra-ocular Muscles with Notes concerning Operative Treatment of the Associated Divergent Squint.

چکیده
THE earliest sign in progressive muscular dystrophy of involvement of the extraocular muscles is usually a bilateral ptosis which is followed by slowly progressing immobility of the eyes. The central nervous system as well as the skeletal muscles may be affected. Furthermore, heart disorders have been reported. At present, the disorder is attributed to progressive dystrophy of the extra-ocular muscles and not to degeneration of the nuclei of the third, fourth, and sixth nerves as was thought before. The reader is referred to the papers on the subject by Kiloh and Nevin (1951) and Papst, Esslen, and Mertens (1958), and more recently, Lind and Prame (1963). The present case showed dystrophic changes primarily in the extra-ocular muscles which led to marked restrictions of the ocular movements as well as to divergent squint. The condition was improved by squint surgery. The presenting sign was continuous lacrimation, and practically no ptosis could be observed.

Progressive Muscular Dystrophy of the Extra-ocular Muscles in a Negro.
ABOUT 150 cases of progressive muscular dystrophy involving the extra-ocular muscles have so far been recorded in the literature. As far as can be ascertained, this condition has never been described in a Negro. The myopathies are characterized by a primary dystrophy of voluntary muscle. Kiloh and Nevin (1951) reviewed the problem of progressive dystrophy of the external ocular muscles and conc...

THE various names given to the condition of ptosis and progressive ophthalmoplegia first described by von Graefe (1868), reflect views regarding the undecided aetiology of this condition, e.g. chronic progressive nuclear ophthalmoplegia, ocular myopathy, progressive muscular dystrophy involving the extra-ocular muscles, etc. M6bius (1900) had named the condition "progressive nuclear ophthalmopl...

Background: The association of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) with other neurological disorders is uncommon. Case presentation: We report a 25-year-old female with LGMD who suffered from slowly progressive proximal muscular weakness and atrophy since she was 12 years of age. The patient recently presented with acute loss of left side visual acuity. After evaluation, findings were sugges...
متن کاملAn 81-year-old man from a family with a history of oculopharyngeal mus-
cular dystrophy (OPMD) involving 6 members over 4 generations is described. The patient first noted drooping of his eyelids at the age of 65. Dysphagia and dysarthria occurred soon thereafter. At age 78, impairment of gait developed and progressive wasting occurred in the limbs with an initial distal distribution. Electromyography of several limb muscles displayed a mixed myopathic and neurogen...
